I've barely begun the 30 and decided its just not what I want. I'm going to swap the reef over to the 75 and run high light on one side and low light on the other i'm also going to go with all new sand and a more satisfactory design to the sump. My thoughts on the sump are going to be 55g sump, 125g skimmer, miracle mud/rubble zone for pod breeding, and a 2 sided vertical turf scrubber. so right now I am stocking up on sand a couple of bags a week until I have enough for what I want for a sand bed. of course this will be a slow thread. like everything I do it will be tortuously slow..

I've always read that 55g tanks make terrible sumps. Probably because they're so tall and narrow? Anyways I was gonna do a 55g sump but switched and went with a 40g breeder and have been very very happy with it since.

I just built my sump from a 55g... The only thing i could think negatively on it would be the height requirement of your stand.. i find it to have plenty of room. I even have a monster of a skimmer Reef Oct 200... I'll be posting a build here once i get it finished... i am not a fan of the builds that drag on...

My stand was built with a 55g sump in mind. I've had this 75g and a 125g on it with a 55g sump in the past. plus I already have a 55g so its one less expense. even at a dollar a gallon it's 40$ saved. I like having the extra water volume as well, if I could shove a bigger tank under there I would. a 75g sump for a 75 would really make my day. maybe some day I'll get my act together and put my sump in the basement like I want to and use a 200g stock tank for a sump. but in general I want my sump to be able to hold 50% of total tank volume (the reason is, to do a 33 percent water change you simply drain the sump and refill then turn the pumps back on) totally no thinking involved.

bummer n00b, in my experience the only thing that happens fast in the fish tank world are mistakes. i'd rather take 3 times as long and not make one mistake then do it 3 times as fast and bunk it up a bunch of times. besides i've been in the hobby long enough that i'm not in a rush to see it completed, i've built changed rebuilt tanks so many times I don't have that "it has to be done right now" urge anymore.

I think today I shall dig out my 55g and get to work on laying out and setting up my sump and possibly plumb in the overflow. the hardest part I foresee is setting up the turf scrubber in a manner thats easy to clean the screen. I may do a horizontal/angled screen instead of my usual vertical design.

didn't happen yesterday, wound up sick about half hour after I got up.. no fun but it is happening today. I'm actually doing the tank swap fresh to marine and marine to fresh. waiting for the rest of the water to drain from the 75g. I'll have pictures up in my next lull.

new sand in, tank half full, waiting on mix right now I was a little under on my salt so I have to wait, but the drain is plumbed, adn sump in place. once I fill the tank from the sump i'll adjust the water level and add the miracle mud bucket and figure out the installation of my turf screen and light on the sump.
