I've been playing around with the idea of having my own reef tank for years. Of and on hours and hours of reading. About a month ago I decided to finally make the plunge. I know that bigger is better, but Im using what I had right now and probably end up with something huge a couple years down the road. I am converting a 29G freshwater tank I had (recently crashed when heater died) and using a 10G I had laying around as a sump/refugium.
So far....
I have built my own overflow box which has run constantly for the last week with no issues, no build up of air in the suction tubes.
Built my own baffle for the overflow drain (as my wife was thoroughly unimpressed with the "flushing toilet")
Cut and mounted all the baffles for the sump. (Silicone for Acrylic worked awesome.)
Installed a RO/DI water treatment system in my basement, with storage and float assembly.
Purchased 4 Lamp T5HO (2 Actinic, 2 10k, 4 LED) had to make a new fixture for it. Wife did not like how high the light sat off the top of the tank. It was a cheaper unit Odyssea, but it has separate timers and replaceable components.
Set my tank to 1.025 Salinity using reef crystals (measured with new ATC d-d refractometer)
Installed 6500K CF over the top of the sump, set with timer to run opposite the DT lighting.
Put about 10# live sand into refugium. (Made everything cloudy, I know I should wash it, but was afraid with my city water the chlorine would kill anything good in the sand.)
Waiting on the arrival of 45# of Figi Premium live rock from liveaquaria.com. Should be here tomorrow.
Things left that I need to do...
Get a better pump to move water from sump to DT. Right now I am using 400GPH Powerhead, loses too much trying to pump against the head.
Cut and place eggcrate on bottom of DT, before setting live rock.
Cycle tank.
Locate a source for some Chaeto. Anyone local to Auburn area that has some?
and
Anything else that folks let me know that I may have and probably did miss.
