A collimator is a device that narrows a beam of particles or waves. To "narrow" can mean either to cause the directions of motion to become more aligned in a specific direction (i.e., collimated or parallel) or to cause the spatial cross section of the beam to become smaller.

So if 90 degree cause the disco effect I would think the 70 would cause discoing even more ?

according to the reef keepers site; The 60 degree optics will have a lot of depth penetration, but not a lot of spread, and are ideal for 30?- 40? d??eep tanks. The 90s have a decent amount of depth penetration, but more spread than the 60s. We recommend them on tanks from 18? deep, to 30? deep. The 120s (or no optics on the value fixtures) have a lot of spread, but not too much depth penetration. They will work on tanks up to 24? deep.
-and-
For tanks 12? front to back or less, 6? is plenty of height. For tanks 12? to 18? wide, 6?-10? is a good height. For tanks 18?-24? wide, 8?-12? is a good height. We do not recommend a single light for more than 24? of width front to back

to me though I just can't understand how it could be the exact same? you put any optic on and it is going to send the light downwards right? at least an inch and a half? then spread? that little bit is a lot to me when the light doesn't seem to make it into my tank. if I took all the optics off and set my lights on top of my tank then yes I understand, but with most of my optics still on, I have to keep my lights raised so i'm not getting the spread I want.

According to the Bridgelux site the angular displacement of their LEDs is 120 degrees. I reference Reef Breeders and Bridgelux as most of these fixtures are coming out of the same factory with companies having certain specs changed and rebadging them. Reef Breeders has the most information about their fixtures than any others in the "economy" line.

Rob If there's anyway you could post the specs on the lights most of us have it'd be greatly appreciated. Only want to know the nm of the diodes.

I understand what you are saying about the optics but the spread begins at the top most part of the diode. When you put the lens on it the spread begins at the part of the lens closest to the Diode so you don't get the full 1.5 inch. And my last statement varies as it depends on what type of optic you are using Convex, concave, etc. Here is another article to confuse you a little more. reefbuilders.com/2010/01/27/led-optics-explained/

Does "Rob's light" offer any level of adjustment/programmability to it, or is it just the analog dial to turn down the intensity, and how much is it?
I'm toying with the idea of upping my budget to $200 if that would get me into better lighting territory...

No they don't have any programmability not even if you have a controller.unless you know someone that can mod it? These fixtures are decent led basic lights and for the money they can't really be beat. I believe they're around $110 per fixture shipped but you'd have to look at the lighting post that Rob made.
All that being said I'm not completely happy with my lights and am seriously considering getting different lights. If I decide to get different ones I'll surely sell mine on the swap.

Ditto! Unfortunately with 2 kids and a reef tank, only one person working in the house money is always an issue! I should of bought the Razr's when I got offered barely used ones for a great price but I didn't I was cheap instead!
