When you say not making it into the tank do you mean you cannot see the red ?

I believe these came with 90° optics? Rob would know better then I would.but I think I'm going to try and switch to 120° on some of the diodes specifically the reds, greens and maybe even some whites and blues

Matt you are correct on the edges of the tank getting darker after removing the optics because the light is now spread out more and not as focused, being spread out reduces Par so you would have to turn them up a bit. Earlier I posted you can make up par by overlapping the lights, you are not overlapping lights on the edges of the tank so it gets darker.

Protection from spray and/or scratching would be the best reason I can think of. There is a sealed piece of glass over the LED's, no chance of splashing or scratching. I'm still on the fence about adding the 120 optics, they are $20 on Ebay.......and a little glue to hold them in place.

For 20 bucks what can you loose? if you don't like them they are easy enough to remove.

How many do you get for 20$? I only want to do some of the diodes as to spread the light good and all try and retain as much par as possible.

Actually the edges were dark before I removed them, now there is even coverage across the whole tank, and light for my mangroves...I know I lose a lot of PAR, but I was only running around 15% before, so now I just crank it up to compensate, and I get better coverage, and the tank looks brighter also.

I need some clarification on these 120 optics.
The ReefBreeder Value LED with no optics is "120" and the Photon series and above with ordered with 120 optics, do in fact come with 120 optics. With the amount of spillage I'm having with no optics, It has to be much higher than 120.
Is it more like 150-160? 180?

I removed them on one set and kept them on the other. I have 90 degree optics for days....

Those are the ones I have on my watch list, but I was told no optics are equal to 120 degree optics on RC by a few people. So I haven't bothered to spend the money on optics if it's not going to change anything.

People keep saying that but I just don't see how the optic wouldn't at least send it down towards the tank before spreading it out at least a little? I mean after removing the optics it seems like to much red and green is staying inside the light and barely making it in the tank. Probably because my lights are still raised to much but since I only took off 8 out of 110 optics I really can't lower my lights anymore then they are now.

why would you buy 120 optics? the led is a 120 optic. then you add optics to change that
if you are going to buy optics, 70 degree are supposed to be the best for par. 90 degree is what the light has added to them.
