Thanks for the great input guys!
My biggest concern is the possibility of the light losing par over time and eventually weakening to the point it's growing nuisance algae or not supporting coral growth.
I suppose it's no different than needing to change bulbs with the T5's though. The led's were first sold as the permanent solution to lighting for the tanks with their long bulb life. I think that ship has sailed based on the reading I've done, but at a lower price point it's still a better value than repairing my current lights...
Has anyone noticed a reduction in growth as the led's age?
Rob, what's the price on the led's you're ordering?
Who else on here is running "rob's" lights, and what do you think of them?

the problem I see with the acan light is it is only blue and white, some corals will lose colors rainbows wont be rainbows anymore... thats the problem with the first led I built just blue and white worked great for a couple years but I did lose some colors in some corals....
with led they are supposed to last 5 years the way I see it even at full price for these inexpensive led fixtures if they only last 2 years its cheaper than mh or t5 if you dont care about price the best light I have ever had over my tank was a 3x175w mh with 2x actinic vho t12 anyone that remembers these lights will say the same!!

Let's be clear...light is light. The particular mechanism used to produce the light is only relevant in so far as it's ability to produce the qualities and intensities desired. Further, we are trying to keep animals that naturally occur over thousands of square feet, acres, or miles, vertically and horizontally, in different depths, turbidities, etc. Acting as if there is one right answer is a mistake. Correctomundo! With the price range you are trying to stay within, there really aren't many options out there for reef capable lighting. The reefbreeder led has evidently been selling like hotcakes because of pure value. Mine wasn't a whole lot more than a new XM 20k and my electric bill dropped $12 right off the bat. I am tentatively running both blues and whites at full power but only because there are no optics. I think that the "ReefBreeder Value" fixtures when order with 120 optics in fact don't have optics at all. Whereas when all of the rest of their fixtures come with actual 120 optics (when ordered with 120 optics). The stock 90 optics really don't do that great of a job covering 24x24 even when elevated 10 inches and angled back at the tank. But at the end of the day it is pretty difficult to be unhappy with a purchase of a reef capable semi controllable led pendent that is under $200. Go for it and enjoy! I do miss my halide though...haha

Acan Whites are 12k... Blues are 460nm and 450nm so there is more variety and intensity, there shouldn't be any color loss with the Acan fixture, not for that price.

I have "Rob's" leds lights and they have done good for my tank. They're to powerful and that's a good thing! Using the lights on less then 50% on both whites and blues is going to extend the life of the fixture compared to having to run them at 100%. I will say that with the cheaper leds I can see the "disco effect" on my sand bed.. Idk if reef breeders does this? But I really wish they mixed in better and I didn't see reds and green spots on my rocks and sand. If I was going to do it all over again I'd of probably gone with maxspec razors or one of the other more expensive lights. With the warranty and customer service you'll get from a bigger company that stands behind there fixture and has hard proof of there longevity and capabilities. Controllable lights have to many advantages not to at least give them some long hard thought.I just couldn't afford it at the time. I should of waited. In all reality your going to save money by picking the light you want the first time, being stuck with a light your not happy with for 5-10 years is a long time and leaves allot of room for second guessing and regret. Witch then leads to thoughts of upgrades, witch cost more money in the end. Do your research and choose wisely listen to multiple people you know and trust in this hobby they'll probably all have different opinions but it's good to get lots of perspectives.

if you take the optics of the red and green leds it spreads the light better and you wont get the "discoball" effect

I'd like to switch them out but I'm scared I'd brake the light

If it is one of the Chinese fixtures the fixture comes apart real easy and It is extremely easy to take the optics out.

6 screws holding the case together and 4 holding the plate with the led down the optics pop right off

I mean switch out the diodes. If you remember when you did the order I was in I tried to get different colors? But couldn't because it was a group order.
Either way I'll take the optics off now and see how they do today when it turn on my lights.

I removed all the optics off my LED unit, and it got rid of all the spotting or disco effect.
I have it mounted 8" off the water, and I get full coverage in my pie shaped tank.

I wouldnt take all the optics off your par will be cut in 1/2 just on the red and green led Now I had done a lot of research on the colors but it's been awhile and I've forgotten? If I was going to switch out the reds wouldn't it be for orange? Chyann? And I'm also thinking about switching the "uv" lights since I don't think they even make it to the top of the water.
