So I'm moving, and tho I've moved having a tank before, never so far. I'm going from Lincoln to Sanford :/ I'm slightly stressed thinking about the best way. I have a 40b. Picked up a couple large totes, but I also have a large cooler. Whatever route I go, it will be transported in the back of my truck. So I'm debating this, would the cooler be better for the livestock than the tote? Should I bag everything or leave it? I'm bagging or putting my fish into a smaller container within the tote/cooler so I don't have to chase them twice. Also, I'm going to be moving everything out if the tank the night before and set it up with powerhead and heater. That way I can just pull those and go in the morning and hold onto as much heat as possible. Then I'm worried if things will get to hour or cold on the back of my truck. I'm going to get a thermometer to check now and then but this whole thing is stressful lol. Uuggghhh.

I would think a cooler would be better to aid against temp swings, either too hot or too cold.

I moved a 135g established reef tank water and all. I put all the base live rock in one cooler. All the coral encrusted rock in another. The fish in 5g buckets. I used a clean food grade 55g barrel for the remainder of the water. Seal a meal bags for the sand so it stayed wet. It was mid winter so I used a mini van. I had to travel the tank about 140 miles. Everything made the trip well. It did take a couple hours to get the water back to ideal temperature before I could fill it with live stock. In hindsight I should have cleaned the sand before adding it back to the tank because it caused a complete cycling. I'm not the most experienced member here but I have successfully accomplished what your going to attempt. Best of luck!

I've already pulled most of the sand, I'm only running about an inch right now in the tank. But I stick expect a small cycle regardless. 4 hours travel with a tank is slightly scary lol

Make sure you have more containers and time than you think you'll need. Another trick if you're using buckets - line with plain garbage bags (not anti-bacterial or deodorizing). When you fill with water you can tie off like a giant fish bag with air at the top. Also, prevents sloshing.
Good luck.

Im using plastic totes rather than trying to hunt up buckets. Have two of the big ones from Wal-Mart. I think I will put all of the livestock in the cooler (I thought of lining all with a trash bag to) and the rock, sand and leftover water in the tote. I may bag up some of my more sensitive corals just in case so they don't get damaged somehow. Like the Duncan's and goni. Or maybe just attach them to styro.

If you make it down to Old town I have a ton of extra 5g buckets in my basement.

Lost all my clowns possibly my rbta, its stressing pretty heavy but it's attached to the tank glass (it's stressed to the point if releasing from the aptasia infested rock) my tank nitrates are thru the roof so currently everything is in a ten gln tank until get enough water to do a water change. Didn't go as good as I hoped, and may still suffer some losses Sent from my SCH-I535 using ProBoards
