Poly filters remove ammonia and turn yellow when they do. Never hurts to put a Poly filter in with any traveling livestock as well.

Just make sure you clean your sand with salt water. I usually use the water from the water change as I'm setting the tank back up to rinse out the sand inside of an old fish net. Work really well to get out the detritus and other crud while preserving the bacteria.

I only had about an inch of sand, cleaned it before even transporting it. I do run poly filters, I didn't use ANY water that my livestock was transported in due to the ammonia levels being thru the roof. But from die off from the rock and stress from the transport it still set off a mini cycle. I had my rock in one tote and livestock in another, and two totes of tank water from before removing rock or anything.

So, I just did two 20 gal water changes. I did a 20 gallon wc form my tank and put my tank water into Jess's tank. (this way its established and full of good stuff to boost hers with and help take out the ammonia) I was getting about 80 in nitrates yesterday and today seems to be around 40-60 after the wc and the ammonia was up to about 1.0 yesterday and today after the wc it reads between 0 and .25. This is def been a process and lots of water changes and constant testing but it seems like its starting to pay off. I was starting to stress when I had already done 2 big water changes and yet the levels werent going down too much...thats where you wonder, is it more important to do a lot of water changes to dilute the water with all the bad stuff or do you deplete the good stuff because of doing a lot of water changes to get rid of the bad? Which is the worser evil? Anyways, Jess is a genius and told me to use my current water to help boost her cycle and boost her good stuff while still getting rid of the bad. SO anyways, things are looking better. The corals are looking a bit happier and the tests are reading better but I have to say, the bristle star has taken a BEATING! I put him into jess's tank to avoid him getting eaten by my fish and he has since dropped all but 2 1/2 limbs and HALF of his body...I can LITERALLY see in and out of him, but somehow he's still plugging away...even with the hermits in jess's tank eating at him...poor little guy! Anyways, thats my update...and babbling for you

Starfish are extremely resilient. I've had that monster for a long time and even tho I've tried rehoming him I was quite upset to think he had died. So he will have to stay. The freaky part is watching his dropped legs wander around the tank lol. They even try to eat!!

wow, thats too bad jess.......im hoping i have better luck with my move...the fish and corals will be in the air conditioned car on the way down to SC....fish in tote with the corals bagged sep in those styrofoam boxes.....ive been in contact with a gentlemen down SC ...very knowlegeable told me some good ideas...stop feeding fish 3 days before i move them...less waste in the water...said to put the lid on the tote with my air pump in it...dont keep bothering them, that stresses them out...when i get to SC take lid off, put an over hang pump on the fish get water circulating check the PH and start adjusting that water in the tote with fish...said after i adjust PH slowly start doing water changes in tote a couple times, then after ph adjusted put fish in bags and float in tank when thats full and i add the one and only to full tank and get it up and running........ hopefully crossing my fingers everything makes it OK
