Another great article about both led and lep Again I'm only saying this could be good for large scale coral growers until lep lights aren't so dam expensive. And also according to this article for certain species of coral. www.advancedaquarist.com/2013/2/aafeature

growth or color? this is the question.. it has been debated since people in the hobby started using different light colors. it started with the debate over 6500k mh and 20000k mh... 6500 will give you faster growth but you will lose color in the coral, 20000k will give you better color but slower growth. most people will settle for something in the middle 14000k and get decent growth and decent color..
for a frag tank you would want faster growth, grow out tank you want better color (who wants to buy a brown coral) display tank you want both. plasma cant achieve this by itself..

I know it can't achieve this by it self but don't allot of coral farmers grow there corals under 6500k MH's to get fast growth and then switch them over to 20,000k MH's , t5's or leds to color them up? I mean if your a coral farmer and you could get both wouldn't that be ideal? growth and color? Listen I know little about this light besides what I've read but I just don't see how having a true full spectrum just like the sun could be bad? I mean if they saw 110% growth improvement over any other lighting and have now made a lep fixture with 4 kessil deep blue pendent lights witch at the very least should make up for the lack of blue spectrum needed to color the corals up. so you'd be getting the best growth and coloration?? This is new technology in the coral industry so no one knows 100% if it's the future but I think it's very hard to just dismiss as nothing. With the added 4 deep blue kessils I personally think it's going to get bigger then you think but like all things only time will tell.

you need to think the deeper in the water the coral is the less colors of light it uses. this is why led use mostly blue light. by the time the sun gets filtered by 30'-90' feet of water there isnt a full spectrum on the coral in the wild it is almost all blue light.
look up induction lighting same colors as plasma less heat and they have been around forever. they have a "plasma" induction light I have a 50w....(it is called plasma because the color of light it puts out is between 2600k-3200k)

Aren't a lot of corals from shallow reefs as well? idk I'll defer to you on this one because you have way more knowledge in lighting then I do, but I still want to keep an eye on them and see how they progress over time. they're actually pretty cheap compared to when leds were brand new and even still now comparatively speaking. Maybe they"ll turn out to be good for species specific tanks of coral? maybe they'll quickly flame out like CF did? who knows...

Wouldn't that just exacerbate the whole allege issue? As, isn't it always said to keep tanks away from natural light windows, doors..etc?

Lighting can only enhance algae. Algae can't grow or live on lighting alone as far as I know? That's why if you run bio pellets you shouldn't have macro algae and vice versa. Either way if you want to know more about it there's a couple great articles on it and a Florida public aquarium is actually testing these with mh side by side right now and other test have already been done.

Have you decided on lights yet? I ended up getting 2 kessil A360WE can't wait till they come in! With the 4th sales going on right now I contacted cultivated reef and got a killer deal. The more reading and research I did the more I kept leaning towards kessil weather it was the A350 or A360 I just kept going back to them. I was moderately interested in the orphek atlantik v2 but with my center brace I just didn't think it was the right light for me. Also considered the zetlight Qmaven zt6600 but again I thought I'd waste to much light with the center brace. It's kind of funny because after extensive reading/research all the leds I was looking at besides kessil weren't really big names Maxspect, AI and Echotech To many company's are using up their R & D time on programming imho. Thunderstorms and all that. The light being best for the health, growth and coloration of the coral needs to be first and all the other stuff after. Not that any of those are bad lights because there all great lights just when your spending $1000 on lighting you expect the best quality lighting not just programming.
