Need to pick up a sump for the planned 125 (interesting on how multiple people are doing a 125 build). I would like to hear the pros and cons of a 40 breeder plus a remote Refugium compared to a 55 with included Refugium. I would like also to put a reservoir tank underneath the stand. My stand will be custom and it will sit up higher than most so if all things equal which would you choose, why and what do you see as pros and cons.
Thanks and let the opinions begin!

I'm setting up a 125 and will be using a 40b for my sump. In my case it is going under my stand so the height is a concern for me. The 40b is wider and seems easier to work in.
I'm not going to speculate on the pure functionality of it as I really don't know and don't want to spread bad info. I'm interested in reading the responses as well.

I can't remember if your 125g is a 6'tank or a 4'tank?

A 125 is a six foot tank for reference.

Even with a higher stand, working in a 55 under another tank is not all that easy due to it's height to width ratio.
Funny how no one ever considers a 40 LONG...same length as a 55, about the same height as 40 Breeder.

I have a 55 sump and I wish I had a 40b like lance said it is awkward to work in and I have a huge stand,

I like the idea of the 40 with the remote Refugium. With the remote refugium you can control the amount of flow going into it, With the 55 you would have to run the water through it slowly as to not stir up your refugium limiting the water volume into your sump. The 40b is wider and will disperse the water as the 55 is narrower and will be more turbulent.

Could do a Perfector 16H (20x10x18) ATO reservoir, 40B sump, Deep Blue 35 Cube (rimmed 20x20x20) refugium. Would have to make the stand a bit larger but would have some pretty awesome filtration (Success!!)
As for prox/cons: Let's say you have a skimmer that likes a depth of 9", so your tallest baffle is 8.75" in the 40 or 8.625" in the 55. You would then have a fuge with a max height of 9" right. This is unless you have a 12" baffle with a 3" stand under the skimmer. Stands are fine though I don't particularly care for them.
In an ideal word (Fenner et Calfo) a fuge should be 400% the size of your display tank. So when you are into the world of having a fuge far less than 100% of your display, every cubic inch of space makes a pretty significant contribution to the effectiveness of the fuge. That being said it should be pretty clear that if you can run a remote fuge as large as possible, have no regrets and do it.
Can even have one of your two drains go right into the fuge (raw water. planty like). Have the fuge drain into the 40. BOOM

One thing I disagree with is having your overflow dump directly into your refugium, eventually your refugium will turn into a swamp. At least run the incoming water through a filter sock to clean out the heavy crap. One thing I neglected to ask is are you keeping everything under the tank?

How do you mean it will turn into a swamp? I've been under the impression that different pods prefer different things ranging from uneaten food to detritus. In which case mechanically filtered water would be counter productive.

Yes all underneath in the stand, completely self sufficient outside the rodi line coming from another room.

You are dumping flake, freeze dried krill, frozen food, etc, etc, into your tank and lot of this ends up in your overflow, depending on how much you feed quite a bit of food will end up in the refugium. Pods do consume some but they will never keep up with the possible amount of food that could end up in the refugium before it spoils.

I thought this was common practice, maybe it isn't, but I turn off my main pump during feeding for 5-10 minutes.
