I do and I did a cap full today which is a dose. Sigh, I have a friend but he said the stony corals don't do well in his tank. Is there anything else I can do to bring them down? I don't wanna lose them Sent from my Desire HD using proboards

Over a long period he may not be able to keep them, but they will surely die within days if you can't get the nitrates down.

Sorry, i may have missed it but did you test your nitrates? What were they? Because if that was or is the problem there are different ways you can try to bring them down...

Ok... so that must be the problem! At least you were able to find the problem!!!!!!!!! It took me about a year just because of my own stupidity!

My buddy tested my calcium and mag today and my levels were a tad under but we added calcium and something to help with the mag as well. I think ive been over feeding a bit but other than that i still havent found the cause of the high nitrates other than feeding. What is considered a healthy level of nitrates? I know your corals need some to help them grow but too much can kill it all. What would you suggest?

Hopefully not using the startsmart whatever stuff will fix your nitrate problem!! Way I understand it is that it's adding nitrates to cycle your tank, not good for a tank already running!! Do another water change tomorrow, you could get away with doing daily small water changes for a week. When I'm fighting the red slime I do a 5% change daily till it's in check, which it finally seems to be getting better.

You want nitrates at 0 ideally. I only feed twice a week :/ but nothing goes to waste!!

I havent actually used the start smart i figured I'd ask first. I'll try to do a few extra water changes and i should cut back a little more on the feeding. I generally feed every other day but since adding the coral and LTA back into the tank I fed almost every day because i was adding something new almost every day for a week. Im gonna cut way back on then. I hope I can recover these corals!

Just do a bunch of water changes, make sure you heat your new water to the same temp as your tank fluctuations in the temperature will add additional stress, don't worry about dosing, if your doing enough water changes your levels should get back in check if they were too low. Water change test nitrates repeat. Good luck.

Waterchange, increase surface agitation and run fresh carbon. If you have palys and zoas I always recomend running carbon in case one gets damaged or stressed to to point of releasing toxic goo.

Thanks guys! Ill have to get some carbon then! These are things I didnt even know! Sometimes my head spins when I realize how much there really is to it all! Theres so many products and bacterias and algeas and test kits and it goes on and on. Just when I think i've got a pretty good handle on things I hear about 10000 other things ive never heard before! lol I think maybe ill just hire a maintenance crew LOL

Keep in mind that not all of what you hear is the holy grail...you will find your own way eventually!! However, I was always told its best not to introduce chemicals into your tank unless necessary. I add trace elements (due to my infrequent water changes and to keep my few lps happy) and some purple up. That's about it lol. I don't dose anything, but I also don't keep anything to worry about it either. I am a lazy reefer lol
