Just found this board, saying hi. I'm guessing I know a couple people on here. I've been reefing for quite a while but had a bad crash and took a break. now I'm getting a small reef going again starting off with a 30 for now. My names Erick I live in bangor tanks still new so I don't have anything cool yet still working it up with rock etc. I usually do all out mixed reefs, I think this one is going to focus on sps and lps minimal softies. 30g main 20long sump, 125 super skimmer, 250w de halide light, shallow sand bed. that's it for now just wanted to pop in and say hi when I get good stuff going i'll be swapping out frags as it happens. Figured I'd attach a photo of one of my old tanks from quite a few years ago: 75g 440w VHO, 30 g sump.

Welcome! Really glad you found the board. Make sure to start a tank build thread and keep us updated. Sounds like you have a very nice tank planned out.

here is about what the tank looks like right now. I can't seem to get may camera to adjust to that 20k bulb no matter what settings I use. I miss my nikkon. there is a ton more algae as that picture was a couple weeks ago and using 14year old sand that has sat in a bucket for the last 2 years definitely leads to a LOT of startup algae. no worries it'll balance out soon enough.

ok wrong picture for some reason it wont let me edit it. thats actually the wrong light, thats my old 250w mogul base that I had to use temporarily because the first bulb for my pendant came in damaged. and I needed something while I waited for a different bulb to come in. THIS should be the correct photo, yeah yeah I gotta wipe down the glass.

So probably another month or so and I will be searching for a fair amount of little SPS frags. I have to get the rest of my rock in and finalize my aquascaping before I get too many. here's something you won't here every day, I'm actually going to be looking for the smallest frags I can get, because I'm going to do something different with this tank from every other tank I have done in the past. I'm not going to re-scape it every month. With the smallest frags I can get they will shape themselves as they grow to their position relative to the light flow etc. I'm actually going to do a show tank..... but I want them all to grow in as natural as possible. I must be losing my mind lol.
so any of you sps people on here if your fragging up and you get a 2-3 polyp chip from an sps thats not worth the frag plug its mounted on feel free to shoot me a message once I start begging for frags.

that's a capnella, you want it? it's gotta find a new home, it was just in there as an indicator of water quality during the initial set up and light testing. frikken things are weeds, but I was testing some other lights on another set up and I wanted to see if those lights could sustain coral as an experiment, and the answer was not really well. but i'm not going to have any softies that exude toxins in this tank I don't feel like dealing with the chemical warfare.

Idk about 2-3 polyp chip but I believe yips get the same grown in "naturally" effect from any size small fragments? I mean if you glue or epoxy a 1/2" or 1" Frag directly onto your aquascape it's going to take its natural shape from there. This is just my opinion but adding 2-3 polyp frags to a "newer" tank isn't the best idea. One little bit of algae or cyano covers that piece for a day and it's a goner. Survival rate would be a whole lot better with 1/2"-1" frags with the same results imo.

Jasonandsarah it was merely an example, as in smaller pieces not a 4-6 inch semi grown or a full size 10inch colonies. You'll learn not to take me too literally after a while. 1/2 to one inch pieces will be good once my tank stabilizes.

funny, you know there are plenty of extra nutrients when you put in a bag of phossorb and 2 days later there is algae growing on it.....
Ahh the joys of using really old sand to start a tank.

Lol well phossorb is also known for having a high capacity but not lasting long. It sucks out phosphates quickly but if it reaches it's full capacity it can begin to leach them right back out. Do you think this is possibly why the bags growing algae? Maybe it's starting to leach back out so it's an ample place for algae to thrive? Just a thought Sent from my SM-N910R4 using proboards
