The back panel...and it was painted, that's why I didn't notice the cause of the leak until morning (brighter light).

Nothing. It was a very random thing, I can't figure out any cause except maybe the stand, or maybe a defect in the glass.

I think the long side panels are under more stress if it isn't sitting perfect. Plus the bottom is tempered. Wow, that would of been fun if that's what went!

I have foam under my 40bs on a metal stand. They aren't full yet and I drilled them. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm going to worry extra about mine now. I hope they issue you a refund.

Yes it was from the $1 per gallon sale, end of December. The is the stand www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3730+9883&pcatid=9883, it's rated for a 65 gallon (or 30b, 40b, 50b). How thick does the foam have to be? And are we talking that pink foam insulation board, or what kind exactly? Also, the tank was almost perfectly level, in the basement, laminate flooring on concrete.

1/2" rigid foam works fine it will fill in the voids between the stand and the tank...

About 4 years ago, I had a 55 gallon tank on an old wooden stand, while cleaning it, I noticed the center brace was cracked, and there was about 1/4" difference in width at the center compared to the end... The glass was bowing, and it didn't break. I replaced it that day just in case. It was just a cichlid tank so it wasn't a huge ordeal.

I keep meaning to repair it, but it never seems to be top on my list of to do.

This makes me more frustrated my brand new tank a foot shorter than this cracked in the middle of the night.

I had never heard of putting down foam. I have had a lot of tanks, some on some pretty rickety old or home made stand and never had a problem. Im not saying rob is wrong. most my tanks have been 55g and a couple around 100g. I was under the impression that they were designed to rest on the edges. in fact most the stands were the angle iron frame type your tank slips in and didnt even have support in the middle
