I'm thinking of switching from Red Sea Coral Pro to IO... If it's good enough for Lance then I have to believe that it is good enough for me.

Do you plan to dose 2 part? I believe lance said he uses Io salt because he doses 2 part. So he doesn't need the extra cal, alk and mag that's in reef crystals. But someone that's not gonna dose 2 part I think he might recommend reef crystals? (Same exact salt as Io just added cal, alk and mag) world better for people that don't dose. Some people that dose still use reef crystals (like me) Maybe you should ask for a recommendation on salt?

Considering I'm going to have a 125 gallon stalked with about 75% sps, dosing is in my future regardless of the salt I use. I really like the Red Sea, but I'm not sure it's worth the extra cost.

I use io because years ago when I researched it, found problems with most salt brands.the only one I remember was tropic marin, it had a bunch of lead....
then I found all the big aquariums in the world use regular io. but your salt depends on your tank and what you keep in it. if you have a small tank and do weekly waterchanges I would go with a better salt like esv because you can dial in the specific parameters your tank needs. with a large tank that you will be dosing calcium,magnesium...... I have found it better and cheaper to use the io then add what the tank needs (bi-monthly waterchanges dosing in between)
sux I just bought salt at easy for about $10 more....

Straight from the manufacturer this is what's different between Io and reef crystals.
Enriched formulation. Optimum effectiveness. Formulated specially for use in reef aquariums, Reef Crystals contains essential ocean reef elements in concentrations greater than those found in natural sea water.
Extra Calcium to help ensure the growth of large and small polyp stony corals as well as coralline algae Extra Trace Elements to provide an additional measure of vital nutrients Extra Vitamins to ensure vigorous growth and survival of corals, anemones and other invertebrates in a captive environment Metal Detoxifier - to neutralize traces of heavy metal often present in domestic water supplies.
I personally was kinda surprised it has metal detoxifier.

Most people don't like to dose trace element products. Vitamins and minerals. So it's nice to know they get at least partially replenished with WC.

Extra Calcium - used up in a couple of days in any tank w/ decent calcareous growth Extra Trace Elements - (probably) used up in a couple of days in any tank w/ decent calcareous growth (Actually, if you are going to dose trace elements, you're better off dosing in small amounts daily or weekly rather than having large peaks/valleys) Extra Vitamins - removed in less than a day in any system w/ a decent skimmer and/or activated carbon (Again, if you are going to dose vitamins, you're better off dosing in small amounts daily or weekly rather than having large peaks/valleys) Metal Detoxifier - unnecessary if using RODI...everyone is using RODI, right? (The only other reason this might be of use is if you have rock that has bound copper or other heavy metals from exposure somewhere along the line. These will leach back into your tank. Always good to know where your rock comes from!) And that is why I don't pay the extra $ for Reef Crystals.

What if you were just starting and wasn't dosing your mixed reef with low cal and alk needs? What salt would you choose to best care for your tank?
I do dose and use a good amount of brs 2 part a day. But I started my tank allot different then it is now. It used to be mostly softies.I've only recently changed the tank over to mainly Lps, sps and some zoa's & palys with a small Shroom garden. My tanks cal and alk shoot up fast. Buy I haven't even gone through the buckets of salt I have had for awhile. (Reef crystals) Now I've just opened my last bucket are you saying I should just switch to Io?

I have used IO for 25 years with no issues. I have softies and mostly LPS in a 29 gal, 55 gallon total volume tank with close to zero for real estate. Loads of pink coralline my Bubble tip and Rose bubble tips split on a regular basis ( Rose tip again this morning) Green frillies grow rapidly, trumpet corals, dendros, hammers and frogspawn grow heads regularly. Oh yeah my green Kenya tree looks like a real large tree.
