For anyone who may have tangs or large angel fish. I was trying to think of cheaper places to get sheets of dried Nori seaweed to feed to my tangs. Just like everything else at Petco and some of the other Local fish stores around here, fish food is getting expensive. I started looking around and what do ya know. Walmart carries food grade sheets of dried nori for cheap. Got 20 half sheets for just a couple bucks.
Also I've been making my own frozen blend of food for my fish. It gets a bit messy but its worth it when I see how my fish snap it all up.
I start with-
1/2 pound of raw shrimp with the shells
1/2 pound of bay scallops
16oz pack or similar amount of frozen krill
1lb of fresh sockeye salmon.
I take all these ingredients and slowly mince them up in a blender to give me a chunky paste. Then I empty it all into a large bowl and add the following ingredients.
1-2 bars of frozen cyclopeze, you could easily use the freeze dried cyclopeze to soak up some of the excess juices. I'll probably do this for my next batch.
16oz of frozen PE mysis shrimp
1/2 cup of formula 2 flake
1/2 cup of omega one color enhancing flake
I mix all these ingredients into the seafood paste to thicken it up and add some larger meaty bits for the larger fish. I fill 1 gallon freezer bags so that it flatens out to about 1/4 inch thick flat packs. Freeze and break it up in chunks to feed. I always rinse the homemade food in a brine shrimp net to get out some of the extra liquids in the paste. Plus rinsing the food helps to break it up and separate all the bits.
In the last 4 months of making my own frozen food mix, I've seen my light pink male lyretail anthias change to bright pink/purple. Both my true perculas have brightened al lot as well. I figure just seeing the colors of my fish getting more vibrant makes all of it worth it. I seem to have much better luck keeping large schools of 10-20 green chromis long term with this new mix of food. I've had around 20 green chromis now for over 6 months in my 120 gallon with great success.
