i have a 75 gallon reef with metal halides an have had a few problems with a couple of corals. i bought some hammer corals an leathers frags and for about 4 weeks they did awesome an then all of a sudden they have started to die off while the rest of my corals have been growing good. i have tested about everything you can test for an they all come out very good.the only thing that i was thinking is that i do use city water but i do treat it.was woundering if i really should buy a RO unit an if you guys thought that could be the problem.the only thing that puzzles me is that other corals are doing so good an i have not lost a fish at all in the tank.the other thing i heard was the bulbs could be old but then again other corals are doing so good.any help or suggestions would be great. i have posted pictures on the subject new to the site. thanks alot mike

That very well could be the problem. If your using regular tap water, its probably a 99% chance its gone through copper piping at some point. Even small amounts of copper or other heavy metals dissolved into water can be toxic to corals and some more complex inverts. You absolutely should buy an RO unit at least. An RODI is the best but isn't totally needed. Different corals and inverts have different tolerances to any changes or contaminants in the water.

Hammers and frog spawn are good indicator corals and are usually the first to let you know something's wrong leathers are usually really Hardy. I'm with Ryan tap water may not be consistent or you may have aculminated some heavy metals over time. Tap water often works out at first but has issues long term as thing building up. I recommend a spetrapure rodi they are selling refirbs with new membranes for $125 I bought one and it looks brand new went from 5 tds to 0 was running a Kent unit that needed new membranes. Regular tap water in my town has 280 tD's.

I would definitely recommend an RO/DI unit. I did a lot of research on the ones that this guy is selling here: www.purewaterclub.comVery cheap compared to some other units and most people are happy with it, myself included. I have no complaints with mine... it came in the mail pretty much assembled. You have an awesome tank so I would consider this a wise investment to protect/keep your livestock happy.

I have a small unit from Air, Water, and Ice. They are relatively inexpensive and if you do a search you can find a 10% discount code on top of their quarterly specials.
