So I am planning an upgrade from my 30gal to a 65gal with a 30 or so gal sump. I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row so I know exactly what this will cost and maybe I can pick up equipment here and there. Right now I only run an HOB skimmer and do not really know much about in sump skimmers and was hoping I could get a recommendation from you all.

Don't know much about the latest and greatest in-sump skimmers, but I run a Reef Octopus BH-90 HOB skimmer on my 30 gal tank. You wouldn't believe how much stuff this skimmer has removed. They do make in-sump skimmers as well. Might be worth checking them out.

I use a super reef octopus 3000 internal simmer on my 75 gallon. It's a beast and very well constructed.

I Haven't found anything saying they discontinued the bubble blaster pumps, they've only been on the market a few years and you can still get them. But yes, price is a big downfall to most of the octopus products.

That's why I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck, but I'd also like it to last a long time as well.

What ever you get, make sure you get a skimmer with a decent warranty. Stay away from eshopps and marineland skimmers.

Octopus and EV skimmers ($300-$400)if u want to spend some money for a go quality skimmer that works well. If u want something cheaper and versatile u could use a coralife ($150-$200).
I know easy aquariums sell used skimmers too.

I really want to go with quality, I'd rather spend a few extra $$ and have it work long term w/a good warranty than spend a couple hundred every couple of years replacing the same equipment. I'll look into those skimmers, thanks for the advice guys!

lol a super reef octopus 3000 on a 75 sounds pretty funny. As for the discontinued Reef Octo skimmers/pumps; it is their IN-XYZ series that is being discontinued because their used shitty china pumps. Kind of similar to the bubble magus pumps.
Katie I run a Sea Side Aquatics ES5 on my 60 cube. Retails for 250 and works great. Needlewheel skimmer today are all pretty great and most owners love their skimmer. What you really want to be looking closely at is the pump or brand of pump being used and not necessarily the brand of the skimmer itself.
Sicce pumps are the bee's knees in value/power factor right. If you took 3 different skimmers that all used a Sicce SK 400. So like the Sea Side Aquatics ES7 and the Vertex Omega 180. But have the same pump and similar features but at a significant difference in price. Seeing as how they both have essentially the same pump, you will have a very hard time noticing any difference in performance between the two.
That being said, if all skimmers with the same pump will essentially perform the same to one another, all that is left to consider is ease of use and ease of cleaning.
Jake Adams from ReefBuilders uses the ES5 on his 65 (is where I heard about it). I've worked with the Omega 180 at work and its a gorgeous skimmer but is an absolute pain in the ass to work on. Especially after working with the ES5 which is arguable the easiest skimmer to COMPLETELY break down and clean properly.
If I were you I would find a skimmer with an unmodifed Sicce pump (ES5,7 /Eshopps) versus modified sicce pumps (Vertex/BashSea/Avast) as it will last longer. Funny how that works when the pump is run as it was engineered to haha.

I've had the SCA-302 for awhile now and it works great.
