So I have a 40b with a 20H sump. I'm going to be running a Corlife65 super skimmer, and Kessils for lights a 700gph overflow, and a 712gph pump (will work out to be closer to 500 after plumbing). I need a biological filter and want peoples thoughts. I would ideally like to keep the tank itself sand free, and have been thinking about something like this in the display www.bulkreefsupply.com/marinepure-ceramic-biomedia-plate.html but I also have the sump set up for a fuge, I could run a remote sand bed. It's going to house a homemade frag rack, some frags of Softies, LPS and SPS, have space for media, and maybe a fish or two in the frag tank, it's also going to be plumbed into a 40b display and 40b sump with fuge, however I want to be able to run it independently in the event of the need for a QA. Primarily I want to set this up now to start picking up frags to grow out for my display. I could also get live rock for it..but theres a point where it stops being a frag tank and another full display....I'm just trying to figure out what will handle such a minimal bioload in such a big system (60g's is huge for me). I've also toyed with the idea of doing a cheato fuge in the 20 sump and trying to do sea grasses in the 40b sump. Thoughts? Opinions? Advice?

you could always use one side of the tank for the refuge make a cheato wall to separate the section and hide the pumps, then the tank will be totally self contained
you dont need a sand bed just do frequent waterchanges and the cheato wall will eat the rest of the crud
to make a cheato wall just push cheato threw some spots on eggcrate (light defuser) it will fill in the rest of the spots
dont know if it is to tall or not but, I think I still have a freedom filter kickin around if you want to try it. it might need a new pump rio 2500? its rated for a 90g but I used it on a 120 for a couple years! its a skimmer/sump/filter/powerhead all in one it really does work good (cost $300 when it came out)

you can have the filter if you will use it. I have a rio 2100 pump but I dont know if it will work the skimmer on it properly?

Rob thanks a bunch for offering the filter, I've looked at it and think it's great but I'm going to go a different route as I've already got a skimmer and sump for the frag tank, I'm going to use the skimmer and a fuge for filtration, I'm going to employ some of the ceramic filtration balls to cultivate some pods too, one of my primary goals is to keep a healthy mandarin so being able to put one of these in the main tank every so often should asssist in keeping the pod count up. Thanks again.

its easier if you make the mandarin eat before it gets put in the tank and only takes a day or two
