Funny, I'm really happy with my 40 breeders pretty much just a foot shorter than a 75 but all that surface area. I would recommend drilling your rocks and holding them together with some PVC, I think Ryan has a thread about it. I say this because you'll have the same drawback as I had with my 30xh it's tall but not wide so if rocks are not held together by something stuff will fall over almost daily. I'm doing all my tanks like this going forward but think it's especially relevant for narrower tanks.

I went up to a 180g as my last tank "I will never run out of room" lol if I could talk the wifey into a 500g I would have a 10' tank

75 was my original plan but the tank seems to be the cheap part, the skimmers, filters, lights, blah blah are the expensive part and my wife claims i already have too many hobbies. my tank is gorgeous and it sits in the basement in my gun room because she says its too loud lol.

I dont think I would have a tank in my gun room!! I have seen what moisture from my tank will do to the metal baseboard heating in the same room its basically the same price to set up a 75 as it is for the 55, I think everything that is rated for a 55g is the same as a 75g either way I have seen beautiful 55g setups, they are just very limited on livestock you can have. by the time you add sand, rock... the 55g turns into a 30g. most ppl like to have tangs or other good size fish,a small tank will stress them, causing problems like ich and/or death for the fish

ive been pretty fish shy for about 2 years now. i got a angel from a shop in ellsworth and was assured it was eating well and it died about 10 days later after not having eaten a bite. i tried everything from garlic to live food frozen shrimp kelp clip even just flakes on a hail mary pass. nothing. since then ive stuck to the two clowns and 2 green chromis i have.

Welcome! I used to go hiking all around MDI as a kid. Such a beautiful place! I haven't been back in yeears. Too long.
But as far as making your tank quiet. What specifically is making a lot of noise in your current set up? If you do go with the 55 in the basement, you could do the 75+ upstairs and with a bit of research and hard work you can get these things shockingly quiet. Look into the Herbie drain method. Fairly simple to set up and use and literally the only sound it makes is the trickle of water from the tank into the overflow box. And even that can be quieted with a mod. You can check out my build thread to see what the herbie is like
