I don't always have the time/desire/presence of mind to call a place during business hours. Nor, do I necessarily want to drive 45 minutes just to browse. Often when I'm thinking about this or that fish or coral or plant I'd like to have, it's 11pm and I know I won't call tomorrow, so I figure, hey, they have a Facebook page, I'll send them a PM and they'll get back to me, right? Wrong. One place I tried to get a price from hasn't answered me in two weeks. Another took two days to get back to me with a price, the price was decent, I asked them to get me the fish, and never heard from them again. That was over a week ago. So, why do these businesses insist on having a social media presence, and then fail to utilize it? Am I wrong to find this irritating?

Not necessarily in the aquarium hobby, but in general I find it extremely frustrating when a business won't take my money for a product they sell that I want to purchase....it violates every business principle, even with this level of incompetence they somehow stay in business.

I've had this type of experience with three different retailers now, all of whom people on this board have raved about: such easy people to work with, friendly, attentive, helpful, smart, etc., etc. I just feel like if you don't have the time or inclination to answer your messages on Facebook or elsewhere, then you should either disable the messaging feature (don't know if this is even possible), or take the page down. Allowing messages to sit in your inbox -- or worse, on your wall -- and not bothering to either read or respond to them makes it look like you don't care that much.

Welcome to the 21st century. Sometimes a phone call (not a voice mail) is still the best way to communicate.

I think the reason businesses have social media such as facebook is to get their name out. They have so much to do in the store to keep it up, I think they can't possibly check all sites frequently enough to answer all the questions... I think the best way to find out if they have something in stock or whatever is to call... I know Denis at DSC has a ton of things to do for the business and he can't possibly keep checking every site plus run the business. However, i know if you give them a call during business hours they can answer the question almost immediately.... I guess that is just how it is....
