None! I just wait for the coraline algae to cover the back!!!! Usually doesn't take too long. Also GSP covering the back all is really pretty too!!! I know with my 72 and all the plumbing it would be a complete PITA to try to cut the background to accomadate all of the pipes and overflow box, and then taping it on; but it could be done I guess. Another method I have heard of is people painting the backs of their tanks (sounds a lot easier), I have no idea what type of paint to use, but I have heard of people doing it. Hope this helps...

Krylon Fusion spray paint from Wal Mart works very well. Tape newspaper on sides, and over the open top, lay it down so the back is facing up, so it won't drip. Just don't try to spray paint inside!....blue dust will be everywhere! LOL!

I've seen where people have applied automotive window tint. Don't know what you mean by "background," but I have also seen where people have used silicone and other adhesives to attach slate tiles, mock styrofoam rocks, etc.
I actually prefer no background, and I even like to keep the back panel clean of coraline, etc.

X2 on the Krylon Fusion. I painted the back of my last tank black and liked the look when it didn't have coraline on it.

I like this tank. I painted it with the faux granite paint and then painted over that with Krylon. Attachments:
