Here is the question I posed to Hagen's customer service dept:
"Do you have any data as to what happens if I take an impeller for an AquaClear 50 and put it in a 70? Does it provide the same flow as a 50, or a little higher since the flow is not as restricted in the bigger box? Have you any data on other combinations of impeller/box?"
Here is their response:
"The aqua clear 20, 30, 50, and 70 all have the same motor. They all provide the same flow."
I don't even know how to respond to that. Do I really need to point out to them that the 20 and the 70 clearly do NOT provide the same flow rates, according to their own literature??

I believe they do in fact use the same motors, however the impeller size and the diameter of the intake tubes determine the gph. But I don't know for sure. Anyone else???

Just did a little more research and the intake tubes are the same size, so it must be the impeller size and the overall case size that determines the flow…

The intake tube is bigger on the 70. The difference in the impellers is in the number of blades. I politely asked them to forward the question to somebody in tech. I wonder if they're even thought about what happens when you start swapping parts.
