So guys and gals.... Last week we moved to our new home and all of a sudden we have an algae in our 40 gallon breeder that I've never seen before. It's on the sand, rock, glass and corals. At first I thought it was "red slime" but I've seen red slime before and this just looks different. I think it may be red hair algae but I'm not sure. Not only is it on surfaces but it also is floating in clumps at the top of the water line. Any help would be wonderful! This week we have started 2 x weekly 25% water changes with RODI water.... in hopes of slowing it down. All of our water parameters have been spot on.... no issues there. I think when moving the tank we may have released some nutrients in to the water, and this couldn't have helped. 40 gallon breeder 4 x T5HO 70 pounds live rock 40 pounds sand CoraLife Super Skimmer 65 HOB filter running carbon only 2 x Koralia2 power heads Temp: 80* F

I had them, I did 4 days no light covered tank under a heavy blanket, 50% water change, and a 2hr photo period increasing it 1hr every 2 days until it was back up to 8, it got rid of them. I got mine after my timer was turned to ON and left the light on for 70ish straight hours.

Thank you everyone! Scoobnoob.... I had totally forgotten, the night that we brought the tank over to the new house my husband forgot to put the timer for the lights on "auto" and they ended up being on for about 50 hours before I came by the house to check on thing. I think we've figured it out... it's all my husbands fault... I knew it...lol

Thanks guys..... we did a 50% water change last night, sucking up as much of it as we could see.... and started a blackout. In 4 days we will pull the covering off of the tank, do another 50% water change and start working our way back up to 8 hours a day of light over the next week.

You might have to do a couple black outs but that with water changes seems to work, I also ran chemipure elite too but thats usually always in my Nano's rear chamber...if we ever trade frags I guess I owe your husband a beer for sending him to the dog house. Good luck with it.

I've had this stuff. too. You can also try to run some carbon, and get your dKH up to 11-12.

So..... we did a 25% water change, new carbon and 72 hour black out on our tank and things are looking better! Corals are a bit pissed off but they're starting to come around. In the morning we will be doing another 25% water change, carbon change and slowly work our way back up to 8 hours a day of light! Before anyone says it..... I know that the tank isn't level.... it slipped off of it's blocks when we were doing the last 25% water change..... I'll be fixing that in the morning.
