I was just wondering what people have found that works well for them for keeping snails and jumping fish in their aquariums while still allowing decent light penetration.
Right now we have the glass top type with a black hinge in the middle and I'm sure this design probably isn't the best for allowing light through.

I've always kept open tops without issue so I won't be the best help. I can say though that many people make their own fishnet tops to cover their tanks and many use light diffuser grid.

Bulk reef supply sells a diy kit and give extra netting from what I'm told. I'm going to order one for my 40 when I start stocking it with fish.

many use light diffuser grid. a/k/a egg crate, and available at Home Depot in the section with the fluorescent light fixtures. It's brittle, and can be a little tricky to cut.

Whenever we've needed glass for the top of our tanks, we've always gone to Portland Glass. The custom cut glass lid for our 40 gallon breeder was something like $14.00.... we then used 3M foam tape to add a set of handles to the glass to make it easier to remove and place back on the tank. The entire lid cost less than $20 and you don't have that nasty black strip running down the middle of the glass like those store bought ones have!

Its also garbage for covering your tank. I'm sure there are folks out there who have successfully kept all their fish in their tank. But a buddy of mine woke up one morning to find his 2.25" clownfish on top of his eggcrate. The holes are just way too friggen big. The screen tops are the way you want to go for sure. They can be a real pain if you have gear on the back of your tank. but if you have your tank drilled in the back or through the bottom. You can have a nice square or rectangular top that only neon gobies and the sort could find their way out of. fwiw a fish got through the eggcrate top at easy aquariums while i was there a few weeks ago...not effective at containing your loved ones

The egg crate I'm talking about has openings that are 1/2" square.

I'd like to see the 2" Clownfish that could sneak through that. I'm thinking a dartfish could maybe get through if he had really good aim.

lol murpheys law right? Ask Jason at easy aquariums how his 3" wrasse fit through. I have no idea how it happened but it did. We have to remember that in nature when most of these reef fish get spooked they swim vertically in the water column. They can power upwards for meters and meters without a problem...not in our aquarium they cant. So when they hit the lid they are doing it with a lot force.
