So about 2 months ago I got a bigger powerhead and noticed it was just to much flow for my tank. I was going to take it out and saw a old timer in my stand. I decided to put the powerhead on a timer. During the light cycle I run it for 15 minutes out of an hour and when the light go out it runs all night. The corals get slammed during the 15 min and get rest for 45. I would have to say this was a great thing for my tank. The corals are strong and bushy. My neighbor also noticed this and now has the same setup. So if you can't afford a wave maker I really suggest you do this. Also works for all coral types. The softies enjoy it just as much as the acros.

I have 2 timers that operate at 30 minute intervals. I'm thinking of using these 2 timers for 2 different Hydor Koralia powerheads, alternating each one; 30 min on while the other is off during the day and then having them both on at night. Do you think this would accomplish a similar result to what you've seen?

I think there has to be time where there is no flow. Gives the corals a break and really lets them open up. In your case I think having them both going in intervals would be fine the koralife are more spears out flow. My problem was that my powerhead is really strong almost causing a storm when it turns on.

Thank you. We'll give it a try and see if there's any change in the growth in our corals over the next couple of weeks.

+1 My buddy had 2 koralias on a hydor "wavemaker". They would run in reverse more often than not. He got rid of the wavemaker all together.

Thank you Christian and Sokretys so much for letting us know! I'll change things back to the way they were.

I recenly learned this bit of information from Hydor. The newer model of Hydor Koralia pumps, their "Evolution" series pumps, can be used on timers or wavemakers.
The older models are the ones that had problems.
