Your dog drank the water? I wouldnt think thats a source of contamination unless the dog dropped a treat or something into the tank water. I could be wrong though. Why would you think this is reason to do a water change? Id have scolded the dog, made sure it had fresh water and left the tank alone till its regular water change. Seems odd that things are going downhill now. Maybe there was something off with the water change water. Interesting for sure though. Start checking your water parameters, and toss in a new poly filter and some reef carbon to try and remove any possible contamination.

well reason for my thought is that shes just a drooly messy dog and who knows whats been in her mouth. she left drool all in the water. as for lotions ect im overly stern with the girlfriend to keep that stuff out of the room. the only other thing i can think is the fuge is 3 weeks old. it was previously used as fresh and not knowing the history of meds in the tank i disassembled the tank cleaned it all with white vinegar and rinsed and rinsed it some more before rebuilding and recaulking the tank. I used an acrylic caulk with no mold inhibitors and after letting it cure for 3 days washed and rinsed again with vinegar and water. my thought against that was that everything was fine for at lease 3 weeks with the new fuge.
at this point its basically a loss and am gonna be starting over

What size tank is it, and what kind of fish did you lose?
Tonight as I was feeding my fish, my Collie started lapping up New Life Spectrum pellets out of the can. He won't eat Cheerios, or pretzels, or the wrong color treats, but he'll eat fish food.
