Thinking of getting back into the hobby. Setting up my old tank(cause its all I got!) . A 50 gal w/ 2 - 10 gal. Sump/ refugium linked by a water bridge. Am curious about reusing my old (dead)live rock and sand. Any suggestions. I will most likely need to upgrade some things such as a skimmer, lights, and maybe a pump. Will be looking for good used stuff as I'm on a low retirement income. The setup will be slow as it will be a while before I can add any live critters, fish to it. I welcome any bits of wisdom or leads to good inexpensive stuff. Thank you in ade😁

Great to hear!
I would soak your rock in RO for a week and then test for PO4. Repeat until your rock isn’t leaching anymore. Better to deal with excess Po4 now instead of in the tank.
Good luck

Ryan from Bulk reef supply did a video on old rocks and cleaning them. A 1-10 ratio of bleach to water was the best option. It removed all the old organic material without removing rock. Followed up by a fresh water soak and or declorinator or time spent drying in the sun to let the bleach neutralize. I recently did this to a handful of large rocks of mine and let them sit out in the sun afterwards for a few weeks and there’s absolutely zero organics or bleach smell left.
