So, I tore down my tank the other day pulling all of my rock and most of the water out (to keep the rock wet) so we could take out my sixline because she started being EVIL! Within not even 24 hours she had shredded my brand new saddleback clown's fins so much that he could barely swim! She was relentlessly attacking both clowns and I'm wondering if she was the reason for my clown's death about 5-6 days back.
Anyways, we got rid of her as well as the 3 damsels in my tank that were originally bought as trial fish...that way if anything died, I wouldnt be devastated. They ALL ended up living...the first death ive had was my clown of course. They got more and more aggressive and im done having little jerks in my tank.
So, now I have 4 fish gone and I'm thinking about my choices for re-stocking. I want a happy tank without anymore jerks! (i def dont want to tare my tank apart again) I was thinking....
2 lyretail anthias (or any pretty anthia, but these males are beautiful) 1 royal gramma 1 blue ring angel (although now ive heard conflicting opinions about being reef safe)
I'm pretty much looking for something colorful, peaceful, reef safe and that will do well with my current fish.
I have a 55 gal currently with a sailfin tang, a firefish, 3 chromis, a lawn mower blenny and my two saddlebacks. I have a condy anemone and an BTA, 2 cleaner shrimp, 2 emerald crabs and some hermits.
I also got nestle a great new home so now im also looking for a new and pretty reef safe star as well. Any of your ideas would be appreciated! Thanks everyone!

if you want an angel in a reef go with a swallow tail, or a bellus

Lyretail anthias can be pretty aggressive. My new male even chases my baby hippo tang. Keeping only two is also a bad idea because you'll inevitably end up with a male and female and the males always harass the females to no end. If you keep at least 2 or more females wit one male it will spread out the aggression.

That's a bummer! They're gorgeous, but the last thing I want is more mean fish! The whole reason i liked them is YOUR fault Ryan, i loved the male with purple fins at your house! LOL Is there any other type that you would suggest or are they just as mean when you only have one? Any recommendations for other fish that are colorful and rated for my tank?

Dispar anthias are suppose to be really laid back but hard to get eating as well. A little aggression in a reef is natural anyway though. Pretty much any fish can become aggressive. It's simply a matter of how much aggression your other fish can tolerate. Torn fins are nothing to worry about and completely normal to have happen. It's all part of how our different fish try to establish a hierarchy between themselves.. Missing fins, flesh wounds or dead fish are what you have to worry about. If you really want lyre tail anthias, get a bar minimum of two females and one male. More females is better though. You also don't need to spend $35-$40 each for lyre tails. If you patient, Liveaquaria.com has them on sale often for as low as $13 but usually for $17.99 each.

Ive seen ripped and tattered fins, but the little clown has chunks missing and the rest is shredded up. I honestly think she was the reason for the other clown's death. My water quality is fine and it never seemed sick. I just dont want a repeat. I am not set on lyretail, I just thought they might be a pretty addition. Mostly, i just dont want any more BAD agression like the wrasse was getting. I jut googled the disbar, they're beautiful too!!!

I think the saddlebacks get a bit aggressive themselves as they mature? Can't remember

There are many different cardinals that are peaceful, you can do some chromis if you select carefully, you can look into some tangs, different gobies, I dare say other wrasses, Big fan of shrimp gobies. I can attest to the Royal Gamma as being a great fish, I had a clown, royal gamma, sixline and yellow watchman all peacefully cohabitating in my 24 nano.

Don't forget, all tangs get big with the smallest species maxing out between 6-8 inches in length. They all need lots of swim space and Like I've found out, many will get just as aggressive as any other fish when they feel cramped for space. Cardinals, fairly wrasses, some damsel and chromis species, gobies and firefish are all colorful, smaller fish alternatives.

I have a female bellus if you want to see one (I think it actually might be changing to a male) I have been looking for 1-2 more for about 6 months now (hard to find)
look at fairy wrasses or flasher wrasses, petco in portland still has a nice blue sided fairy wrasse for like $20!! flasher wrasses have great personality and the flashing is awesome to watch
with anthias and wrasses you want to have a cover on your tank they do and will jump! deep water anthias like flat head and borbonius anthias are better about not jumping

Rob, is that the wrasse we were looking at the day I saw you there? As far as the anthias, my tank is always covered, my goby is also known to be a jumper.
