HI, new guy here just getting back into the hobby. We live in Blue Hill and are on a well. Are there any issues or recommendations on RODI units. Tap water is currently 62F, pressure 42psi, TDS 120ppm, pH 6.96 We just had the water tested and only Sodium was a bit high.
Thanks, Steve

If you do use a RO unit, you will want warmer water and more pressure to get the most out of your unit. There are units with built in booster pumps. Or you might not need one at all.

I guess my first question should have been do I really need a RODI unit, given the water parameters above? The tank will be a Red Sea Max e-170 45 gallon. I intend to keep it simple as far as that is possible in the marine world. A few fish, inverts, softies and some of the hardier LPS.

Definitely want an ro unit, your tds is high, the rodi will give you 0tds so you know exactly what is in your water. you will need a booster pump to get the most out of your filters unless you can increase your pressure. Some systems you can do that but I would. Consult a plumber to make sure.

You may be able to get away without using RODI but the certainty of knowing what goes into the tank is truly worth. A lot of us including me have learnt this the hard way. I have well water at around 30-45 psi and can produce RODI albeit at a low volume. The efficiency of the RO membrane increases significantly with higher pressure so a booster pump will help. If you need to make 5 gallons a week you can probably get away without a booster pump. Good luck. Vijay

I haven't decided on a unit yet, leaning towards a high recovery model. As for installation, it will be somewhat odd, in a rarely used small guest shower stall.

I have similar parameters, basic water tests come back great. Very good water quality. My TDS around is 45. I decided it was acceptable to use. And that worked well with one issue: diatoms. That brown film I just couldn't get rid of, it was everywhere. I found it to be resolved by using phosguard but decided to investigate a better solution. I found the silica in my well water was 12 mg/L which seemed to be the issue. Now I use just one DI mixedbed "silica buster" canister without prefilters or RO membrane. Water comes out 0 TDS and the resin lasts me about 3 months for my 40 gallon. Don't have to worry about water pressure and produces pure water at a faster rate than RODI. Plus you don't get the waste water of RODI. If you're willing to spend the money of frequent resin changes (or recharge resin yourself) it might an option for you. It works well for me.

I just ordered a Titan Water Pro RODI with a Permeate Pump, says it good down to 30psi with 80% higher recovery than w/o. I can feed it through a shower fixture to raise the temp to a better operating range. I will let you know how it goes.

Setting it up in a shower stall was my wife's idea which is an ideal place for the unit since I didn't install an automatic shutoff. Not that I would ever forget and let it overflow. Well maybe once, or twice.
