Wanting to keep German rams successfully, looking for advice based on experience. Anyone keep them or have kept them before? I've heard everything from they like a low ph, very soft water to it doesn't matter as long as parameters are stable. They will be kept in a planted tank with some angels and possibly some other community fish such as rainbows.

I haven't kept them in years. The advice about soft water and low PH is correct, especially for wild caught stuff. The tank raised stock should be more flexible. They do however prefer higher temps than most of the fish we keep in our community tanks, which can limit appropriate tank mates. Angelfish can tolerate similar conditions, but Discus are actually better suited to the same conditions if you were shooting for matching wild type parameters. A lot of Rainbow fish like harder water so you'll have to research the species you're interested to see if they'll thrive in the conditions you end up with in your setup.

What is your water like? I have 2 that I got about a month ago. They are in a planted tank with a bunch of other fishes. My pH is high out of the tap(close to 8) but really soft. As above, farm raised are more flexible for water conditions.

Would 6.5 ph be okay for them? I know that's on the low spectrum for angels and the boesemani rainbowfish. As far as hardness, I think I would have to keep the rainbowfish on the low end of their spectrum if the rams need soft water. I'm honestly not sure how the tap water is. All I have owned is the bigger south/central American cichlids so I never tested it. I plan on testing it for the community tank(it will be set up in a about a month).

6.5 would be ok. Check your tap water too.

I was breeding German blue rams in the late 90's, they will tolerate any conditions as long as it's stable..
I wouldn't keep the angels with them angels are mean and the rams just hide so they don't get fins ripped off

Thank you for the advice! I have decided to wait a while on keeping angels/rams. I am going for a goldfish community instead.

I am considering keeping a pair of German Rams, but getting conflicting advice on tank size online. Suggestions vary from 12 gallon to 30 gallons minimum. I have a 18 gallon tank, would this work, or would it be too small and stress the fish? I was thinking of having a heavily planted tank, the German Rams, school of neon tetras, and some otocinclus cats for algae control. Any advice?

That should work.

Thanks! Then I will plan the build/tank set up.
