I know there's been some older threads about DC pumps, but it seems there's many newer brands/models developed since. I was hoping to hear from the community about their thoughts or experiences with some of the newer DC pumps and included controllers? Particular brands? Features you like/dislike? Noise levels? Size (physically not flow rate)? Price Points? Etc? What are some of your "old faithfuls" you've been running for a while?
I'm looking to upgrade and particularly intrigued by the new Maxspect Turbine Duo 9K DC Pump, but can't find much reviews. Love to hear about your Reef Octopus Varios, EcoTech Marine Vectras, or Neptune's Cor Pumps if you've got experience with those too?

Thing is a power house and I hardly hear it.

I have a waveline that has a bad power supply in 3 hours. Ive been running it for about 3 years since it was replaced. I would do research and stick with a reputable brand with a good warranty. Definately electricity savings.

As far as controllability goes, DC pumps are the way to go. I’ve had my ecotech vectra M1 for over a year and a half now and overall I love it. That said it’s had some quirks with calibrating and programming and just recently I had to have a new power supply sent to me because mine died. Long story short, every manufacturer has problems of some sort with their products. DC pumps are great in many ways but it’s hard to beat the tried and true AC pumps that do just that, pump! I went three days waiting for a new power supply with a dead DC pump. All that time my old mag 18 water change pump saved the day and kept on humming and pumping water.

After a power outage does the controller loose or keep it's calibration settings? One of the things I'm worried about is a DC pump running at 100% after an outage.

I've been using deep water aquatics dc pumps. One for about a year and another for around two years. They aren't as nice as ecotech pumps but I haven't had much for problems. The only issue I have is during power outages. They remember the previous flow setting fine. The issue is if the power flickers on and off it confuses the controller and the pump doesn't restart on it own. If the power just goes and stays out it's fine. I've contemplated putting them on a ups to prevent this, but at that point it might be just as cost effective to buy a higher end pump

Well, despite the lack of reviews I bit the bullet and just dropped $300 on the new Maxspect Turbine Duo 9K DC Pump. After a week of contemplating and heavily researching the different controller features of various models, I couldn't help but feel the Maxspect really had the most versatility and power for the price. The expandability will be great when I upgrade in the future, and the small size will be perfect for my application in my small sump. Biggest drawback seems to be head pressure, which isn't an issue for my under cabinet setup. I really hope it lives up to the promises. Obviously reliability remains a huge concern of mine, as well as noise levels as it's not yet proven with no feedback. But Maxspect is a reputable company, so it's my hope they'd make right on any issues. I'll let everyone know how I like it once it's setup.

Turns out I made a mistake. The Maxspect Turbine Duo 9K DC Pump is great on all aspects except the pumping part, lol. I actually really liked it's form, size, controlability, and well everything...except it's head pressure. Of which it has none. At 0 head pressure, oh ya this baby is great, moves a TON of water. Soon as I put 1' on it oh man does the flow drop. When I experimented with it in its various forms in my tank with about 4' of head pressure, at it's max everything, I got less flow than my little pump rated for less than half of this bad boy! It's clear this pump was NOT designed with even under cabinet location in mind, despite it's claims. The rated flows Maxspect advertises are sadly WAY OVER estimated. I'm going to give the Ecotech Vectra S1 a shot next.
