Unfortunately the media is blind to the many positive reef restoration projects going on in our world.
A quick search will find many projects dedicated to repopulating dead reefs.

I agree. Sad, though, to see the beauty that nature has created be destroyed by the doings of man. What restoration that we can do does help, but we can never replace it completely.
