I've never had a marbled, only solid, bi-colors and a mustard gas. Why would you think they'd change color? My bicolors and my mustard gas never changed... He's beautiful!! The iridescence is gorgeous! Hope you have power!

From what I've read and seen in pictures, kois are notorious for changing colors entirely. So far he's still the same I think. Will have to compare pics to what he looks like now to make sure. lol. I had no power for 9 days. No heat, etc. He is doing ok, however his female friend succumbed to dropsy. She was new and thankfully not in the same tank to spread the infection. The water went from 80 down to upper 60's in that time and thanks to lease requirements I can't have heaters of any sort in my house. So when the power is out.... We seal up in the fish room, thankfully very insulated house, and light up candles. Poor fish and plants had no light for 9 days... Fed them minimally and hand circulated water as much as I could. Cycling a couple tanks so that was fun not being able to do water changes and no working filters but everyone else survived and appears no worse for wear.

I feel bad for him because I had his female friend in a large pickle jar inside his tank after the power came back on because that is the warmest tank I have, and I was hoping that and meds would help her survive. She liked seeing him and perked up and ate and acted livelier for a few days.... But he made multiple bubble nests for her and today she died. I took her out and now he keeps going up to the jar and looks for her. So now to find another female friend for him.... Poor guy did all that work and is moping around now. I love the blue streaks on his tail. Almost monograming him.

Yup. I lost a few fish during the power failure. Lost my cardinals, my red beta and a few Gertrudes. But my beta was a bit old at 4 years. I had battery powered air pumps and dosed Prime, but they just needed more circulation... I have a generator in the basement, but it hasn't been run for years. I want to get a propane powered on, they need less maintenance than my old gas generator. The filter cycle came back pretty fast once the power came back. I did clean out the filters to get out any toxins from dead bacteria, and I gave all my tanks a good dose of Safe Start to help them recover. Just glad it wasn't this week as the temperature is suddenly winter! That's cute that he was romancing her! Maybe you could get him a new girlfriend and use a tank divider to prevent them from actually breeding... I think if I get another I might get another mustard gas. But I'm redoing the community tank completely, so it'll be a while. It's an older tank and the silicone isn't in the greatest of shape... I've always kept a male betta in my community tank and they've always played nicely in the sand box with the other fish. It's a heavily planted 40 gallon so there are lots of breaks in the line of sight and plenty of room for him to stake out a territory... And betas are such friendly fish! You can definitely get attached to them!

Where did you get him from? Your mustard gas that is. His caudal fin had a very nice spread. Paired with the right female he'd possibly have some beautiful babies. I'm trying to find some females with good halfmoon form....

I got him on Aquabid from a seller called Aquastar71 from Thailand. He was a splurge LOL!! I never thought to breed him. I'll bet breeding betas would be loads of fun, but I wouldn't know what to do with the low grade babies... You could sell high grade ones on Aquabid, but I wouldn't know what to do with the other babies, and I wouldn't want to give them to a pet shop so they could live in little vases or cups... I've always kept betas in a 5 gallon at the least, or in a larger, planted community tank. Although I'm used to culling my shrimp, I always feel bad about culling fish... Too wimpy for that. I don't know if that makes sense or not... I feed my shrimp culls to my goldfish. I figure it's good for them. It makes them feel like a real fish to get to chase something and it's a good source of protein. But I just can't make the same disconnect with fish... It's just me I guess... Weird...

Marble bettas do change color throughout their lifetime. I have one that I ordered from Prism bettas and he originally had a lot of white but now he’s mostly blue and yellow. He’s the father to my betta fry that are a little over two months old. I’m in the process of building a betta barracks to house the babies that are a little too aggressive to stay with the others. Keeping the fry is a challenge but in the end I’ve found it super fun! This is a pic of the dad:
