Hi, Just joined this forum and super excited to see a Maine group. I thought our state was pretty dead when it came to any sort of online fish group.... I ordered some guppies off ebay from a seller in NM this week. The package is taking longer than another package with some supplies in it that is out for delivery today. They both have tracking but seems the box with the fish isn't being scanned or is just moving a lot slower even though it was sent first. So was looking online and ran across a Maine.gov page that said something to the effect that you need permits to import fish into the state? I figured where guppies are unrestricted and were people ship fish all the time that they should ship here just fine. Do I need a permit? Too late obviously.... This is my first time buying fish online so if anyone could chime in whether I should expect problems with my fish crossing state lines, or if they buy fish online regularly, that would help. Last known location for my box was El Paso. The sender said they marked the box "Perishable, Fragile and Live Fish". Said that he finds they are handled more carefully that way and sometimes take longer but result in fewer crushed boxes and the post offices don't leave them out in the weather as much. So what are your experiences?

If the fish is listed on the unrestricted species list then you don’t need a permit. Prime example would be liveaquaria. Now shipping fish via USPS would concern me. Was it supposed to be overnight shipping?

2 day. Sent out two boxes and I got one but not the other. Has a 72 hour heat pack and breathable bags. Mixed feelings about that. lol. I hope they appear back in the system tonight and I get them tomorrow.....

Welcome to the forum! Glad you found us. Any luck receiving your fish today? The box you did receive had just supplies in it and no live fish? Shipping fish is always a gamble, regardless of who the carrier is. Most shippers are good at packing fish now for extended trips. I don't have any experience with those breather bags. For future live fish purchases where shipping is required, check with the seller about live arrival guarantee.
As you saw, there is a list of fish species that are allowable to keep in Maine (this list is a joke imo, but let's not get into that here). You do not need a permit for your guppies.
Good luck and I hope you receive your fish soon! Let us know how things turn out.

Well I would of gotten the fish today but noticed they were in Bath yesterday afternoon so drove down there and picked them up. They are all alive and healthy. Had some pretty red gills when I picked them up, probably made more noticeable because they are albino, but added some ammonia remover as soon as I opened the bags and drip acclimated them. The redness faded quickly. They are zipping all around the tank and seem no worse for wear. Yeah I have my own opinions about that list but it is what it is. lol. I'm happy to see they have added hedgehogs and african giant millipedes to the list. The first box I received was sent as a bonus really and had breeding mops and microworm cultures. Nothing I couldn't track down here, but hey, added on free, why not.

I've ordered fish online before; liveaquaria, bluezooaquatics, wetspottropicalfish, batfishaquatics are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Usually it's next air via UPS or Fedex. Normally the only thing I would risk USPS(because their two day is just a guess not a guarantee) is anabatoids like Betta as they are much more tolerant of low oxygen conditions.

Welcome to the board! Yeah, most reputable sellers ship fish overnight with a live arrival guarantee, which is $$$ but worth it. Inverts can often go priority, but they're not on the list of accepted species (wink wink). Try Aquabid. Best place for fish and plants imho. Glad they made it okay!
