I got my 90ish gallon cube tank from Marine Ecological Habitats and am just waiting for the cabinet I'll be modifying to use as a stand to come in before I can start setting this puppy up. I'm thinking of going with live rock instead of dry like I have in the past. Risk/benefits are pretty straight forward. I'm curious if anyone has dealt with gulfliverock.com. They seem the most reasonable for shipping somewhat cured live rock. I'll be honest most of what I see sold as "live" rock is anything but. It maybe already colonized by bacteria but it's stored in unlit tubs/tanks for so long to "cure" it that there really isn't much left on it. I like the idea of getting sponges etc... as hitchhikers that could add to the diversity of the system. Of course bad hitchhikers are a possibility but I'm ok with that. I've heard good things about Tamp bay saltwater but shipping liverock in water means crazy high shipping fees. Gulfliverock seemed like a decent compromise. I could just go dead rock from reefrock.net as in the past but it would be nice to have some nice color etc... out of the gate.

Check out KP aquatics for live rock, one of my clients just ordered rocks from there, currently waiting for shippment but I've heard great things about them and I've had great dealings with the company in general.

Let me know what you think of it. KP is about double the cost of gulfliverock so it'll be interesting to see how it is.

Interesting, to be honest I haven't really looked at prices so that's good to know.

If I had to guess I would say gulfliverock is shipping via UPS as opposed to air freight. This would allow much lower shipping costs but also increased die off during transit because of longer transport times but also probably shipping wet but not actually in water. I'll have to do some more research.

Scoobnoob probably has some if you are looking for a "local" option. He's in Old Town. I have some in my sump I can afford to lose but not nearly enough for a 90 gal tank. PM me if interested. Vijay

So we got an order from KP aquatics today for the Benedict reef. She ordered 60lbs of uncured Liverock, order came in two boxes which in my experience are generally shipped as 40lbs each and each box was packed full, double bagged and each rock was carefully wrapped in wet newspaper to keep stuff alive. All the rocks were covered in hot pink/peach coralline and lots of macro algae with a few sponges. Being it was fresh and uncured aquacultured rock it did come with some crabs, and pencil urchins that I found while inspecting the rocks and newspaper. All the small crabs were dead but the urchins were still alive. I removed them for now just to be safe though. Either way, considering the time I've spent working in and shopping in fish stores, these have got to be the nicest rocks I've ever seen. I'll try to get a pic of her tank tomorrow to show you.
