I'm just looking at fish for my 40b build, I want indo-pacific
1. Red Mandarin 2. Yellowstriped Cardinal fish (3) 3. Blue assessor (1) 5. Flame Angel 6. Tailspot Blenny 7. Shrimp Goby/Pistol combo 8. Two spot hogfish
Okay that's 10 fish for a 40 I know I have too many. I will not sacrifice the Mandarin and am trying to identify all fish that can coexist and not also decrease it's food supply hence no wrasses. All the fish are identified as peaceful except the Flame Angel my 2nd highest priority but I'd be willing to pass on one if it caused problems. I do not have a coral or cleaning crew list but I know I'm going to go for a mixed stony reef with 2 pillar/piles with a big overhang the closest to the powerhead will be all SPS and further away will be LPS. I would also like a small school of fish either cardinals or chromis to give the tank a lot of motion.
Please share your thoughts on this stocking list and any suggestions.

I think the 40b will be to small for the flame angel and the hogfish

I definitely think the hogfish Will be too big. You might do fine with a flame if you start with a small one and don't keep any Other angels with it. A few years ago when I down graded from my 150 gal to a 40 breeder, I kept my flame and it was fine in my 40. Every fish is different though.

That particular hog is only supposed to get to 4" max, blue zoa says 30 or larger...though I'd trust the advice of hobbyist over a retailer between the two I'd much rather have a flame angel anyway..I think I'll get a small one and if it does get too big I'll find it another home. My biggest concern about the flame angel is I plan on having clams and sps

Also what would you recommend for stocking order if I went 1. Red Mandarin 2. Yellowstriped Cardinal fish (3) 3. Blue assessor (1) 5. Flame Angel 6. Tailspot Blenny 7. Shrimp Goby/Pistol combo
I'm concerned about the pecking order as well as when I add the school of cardinals putting too much bioload...is this still too many fish I can't pick one to drop...I know the flame should probably be last. I think the bear minimum would be 3 cardinals, blenny, and Mandarin

Save the angel for last as they can be a bit aggressive to any newcomers.

dwarf angels are hit or miss if they will eat corals, clams. go with a bellus or swallow tail

I once put an angel fish in a peaceful community tank. It was no longer peaceful. All the other fish were picked on and stressed. I had to get rid of it.

again go with a peaceful angel like a bellus not a dwarf angel
