I'm guessing it's a bacterial infection. I had something similar happen to a redtail catfish years back. Melafix and primafix is what I used and it made a big difference. Spotfin may have some input on this as well.

Yes, I would say bacterial infection as well. What substrate is that? Perhaps there are sharp edges that are cutting the barbels, leading to infection. Salt may help too.

I think it's the substrate. Pool sand is the best for them. And Pima/Melafix won't do anything. Hospital tank and antibiotics. Usually when they get that bad it's tough to come back. You ought to put them on pool sand.... If it's a dark substrate you want, some companies sell colored sand but it's $$$$$.
