When I first got back into the hobby, 4 years ago we used to have get togethers every 6 mos, or so. Usually someone would just set something up, and if you could make it, great if not than maybe next time. I think it would be cool to do that again, but I don't think a "reef club" is needed........and in that note, if anyone is interested I would be will to host a swap/get together in naples in early june...... what does everyone think? I like the idea of get togethers for sure!

Back in the SWAM days, it started off great (I was there from the very beginning). Membership grew, we had great meets and speakers, and then it fell apart. Monies, elections of officers, dues, squabbling, missing monies, blah blah blah; it turned ugly. I distanced my self from the club as time went on. It was good in theory, but ultimately failed. We are in a large state with few hobbyists from one end to the other, and it's difficult for people to travel far. I think it's good that you (op) are trying to get things going, but I would avoid trying to start a new club and go the route of dues, etc. IMO, not enough interest or people to make it happen unfortunately. I would suggest working with what we have now. It would be nice to see some tank tours again. I don't do salt water anymore so frag swaps aren't my thing.

My idea is more simply to get people together to see each others tanks and equipment. Swap and trade techniques and livestock. I was around for the swam days and went to a couple meetings. What I liked about that was meeting folks. This site is great, but does not have a lot of traffic. Since getting back into the hobby I spend my time on R2R because there are more people posting there. I know Maine is very large and there are people far and wide. I was just thinking that it would be nice to meet folks, see their systems, maybe do some frag swaps other than Greg's twice a year, and share ideas. If your not interested cool, if you are cool. I in no way want to high jack this site, or start a club with dues etc and have it fail like the last one. What I miss is the community that one presented here in Southern Maine, and it's hard to meet fellow reefers as we are very limited on the LFS front for running into folks and striking up a conversation.

I'd like to see more frag swaps in the southern part of the State... maybe at Easy, they have the space with the new place.
New blood on the forum could give it a boost, that would be a good thing!

I've also talked to Jason at easy abut hosting another swap at some point. From the conversations I've had with him he's Implied that it's a definite possibility of happening. With all the work going on at the store though I wouldn't expect them to host a swap for a little while though.

I would like feag swaps/meetings on a more regular basis. Boston Reefers do a lot of awesome things auctions build systems out od junk. There are many hobbiest that dont know about us I would love ti see this group grow. I havnt met new faces in sometime. Also a fragswap/meeting in a neutral place would be cool and invite the out of staters, get some publicity maybe some new people. Im sure a venue in a good area without much traffic would be cheap and large...Auburn Mall comes to mind. They need the money huge space generally centrally located.

Or just have a swaps and meetings tab and see were that goes. I mean wasn't the original name Maine frag swap for a reason?

Was the original name of this site really Maine Frag Swap? I didn't find this site until long after swam disbanded. Glad my post is generating some interest!

I think we've always made all of our meetings together frag swaps/ gatherings because Maine is a big state and it's hard to get people to gather in one spot. On the other hard there's nothing wrong with doing both at once imo. I mean most of us are coral addicts first. Takes Greg's for instance, one of my favorite people in the Maine coral community period. But would I travel to his house twice a year just to talk and look at coral I couldn't buy? Nope but if I can do both I will....lol trading and selling coral (or freshwater plants (: )is just an added benefit to any gathering

There are 435 members of this forum, and not even 10% are active..........that doesn't make the prospects of an organized reef club too promising.
The purpose of this forum was to have a place for us to talk, swap, and set up swaps without the need of an actual club.

I heard about this on R2R, and I'm 100% down to join this. I would love to talk reef. As green as I am, I've learned more from these forums and the people, then I could've ever learned from a million google searches. I'm in the Winthrop area and I'd definetly be down for frag swaps and the like.
