I posted in the Maine section on Reef2Reef to see if there were any active members there who might be interested in reviving a reef club here in Maine. There are a few folks interested. I was wondering what the response from folks on here would be. So is anybody interested in Starting a new club? I'm not sure what it would look like yet, but if anybody is interested please post here and let me know.

What's wrong with this one? I'm sure there would be interest in frag swaps and tank tours with this group.

What would be the difference between this and a new reef club?

I would love to see a new club that maybe just branches off of this one with frag swaps and meetings!

Maine is such a large state. I'm not willing to drive up North for a meeting once a month, too far, and the people up North probably feel the same.
I don't mind the occasional drive for a frag swap once a year but I don't see the point of more besides meeting someone for a sale of some sort.
Would there be dues? How about a web site? Do we really need another website?
What would be the mission? How would it be different than what is offered on this site?
I appreciate what you are trying to do but personally I'm not interested.
Good luck though.

I'd be interested! Does this group do frag swaps/get togethers ? If not, then maybe use this forum as a base for such events. I would like to network and meet other reefers in the state and this could be a great way to do that- especially for people like me getting back into the hobby and newbies. Just my two cents

Good luck though. Exactly how I see it. The best part of this forum is that it's a free venue to buy, sell, swap, meet fellow Maine reef enthusiasts and have get togethers. If you want to have a coral swap, set up a coral swap. Cultivated does one twice a year. Besides that many of us meet up with one another on our own time to do all of the above.

Another thing to consider with a club is who will run it? Like mentioned above, will there be dues? What will a club offer that we don't already have? Idjust hate to see things go the way The last reef club here in Maine went.

I feel like maybe a yearly fee thats not too much would be ok. Maybe we use this forum as a base and not make meetings mandatory and just try to have fun with it. Also who says the meeting has to be in the same place every time. Maybe we could offer smaller swaps and move the meetings around the state so other people who don't want to travel can attend them. Just make it accessible for everyone

Who would collect fees, who would setup and manage the club and a website and so on and so on. What would the club offer? I'm not knocking the idea of having a club, if enough members feel that a club offers something worth wild that this free forum doesn't offer then by all means, proceed and see where it goes. I may be a little biased because I've seen and heard how it hasn't worked in the past for hobbyists here in Maine.

I was just thinking how it would be nice to have a group and actual meet ups besides to sell coral (even though we all know that is fun) where everyone can talk tanks! Lots of other states have clubs that do seem to work out so I was thinking why can't Maine have one! Maybe some more people will chime in here that want to have a club. Then again maybe Maine aquaria is the place to organize these things. Just want to know people thoughts!

When I first got back into the hobby, 4 years ago we used to have get togethers every 6 mos, or so. Usually someone would just set something up, and if you could make it, great if not than maybe next time. I think it would be cool to do that again, but I don't think a "reef club" is needed........and in that note, if anyone is interested I would be will to host a swap/get together in naples in early june...... what does everyone think?
