I love small fish too. You get so much activity with small schoolers. They won't hurt the adult shrimp, not even a cardinal or a beta would. It's the tiny babies that will be the treat. I keep about a gazillion (to many to count) Bloody Mary's in my 40 gallon community tank, and I know that my fish have a continual source of protein from the babies. But I've got so much moss and plants that there's plenty of hiding places for them, so I still have an excess. But Neo's breed like guppies.... Just make sure you have lots of hiding places for the babies before you put $$ shrimp in there. Here's a great deal on java moss: www.ebay.com/itm/LIVE-JAVA-MOSS-THICK-LUSH-FISH-AQUARIUM-PLANT/122387016139?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D41451%26meid%3D5b09c9c8d77e4bb287cc6c97e85a1f11%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D7%26sd%3D201795785778I've bought from this person twice, because her portions are so generous. Most folks will sell you a golf ball portion. She sells a really generous cup, and it is snail free. I have it in a grow out tank because spring is coming and I sell a lot of shrimp in the spring and fall and I ship them with a little moss to cling to. Have had it going for 2 months now under grow lights and CO2 and haven't seen a snail yet. Shrimp are really fun. I love to watch them have a tug of war over a bloodworm.....

I have to disagree Bettas and other small fish most certainly will eat adult cherry shrimp. Nano fish probably won't but generally anything that fits in a fishes mouth is a possible lunch item. You may find individual Bettas or other fish that don't go after them, but that is not justification for saying that another fish won't. Betta's are insect predators by design. I watched my praecox much on an adult cherry that got sucked up from the sump into the display. They didn't hesitate and went after it with excitement. The cherries were still able to thrive in the display as long as I had a hair algae problem. Now that it's gone the crypts and swords don't provide dense enough cover and the shrimp are gone from the display.

That's what we're talking about here, nano fish... Unless I missed something.... A pracox is a much bigger fish. Yeah, they'd make a snack out of them any day. I've kept several Bettas for the last 5 years with shrimp. Never saw them pay any attention to the adults. An adult couldn't fit in it's mouth... They're really not as aggressive as most folks think. That being said, I wouldn't put 2 of them together in a 5 gallon. And the babies are fair game... I think the only fish that would leave the babies alone is maybe an oto...
The fish we're talking here about couldn't fit an adult in it's mouth... unless I missed something again...
The funny thing is, out of all my small schoolers I've had, the only one I ever saw go after a 1/2 grown shrimp was a threadfin rainbow. I couldn't believe it!! Do you know how small their throats and mouths are??? You have to go out of your way to feed them small foods! My jaw nearly dropped when I saw him, it was stuck 1/2 way in... I didn't know what to do. I didn't want him to choke, but I didn't dare man-handle him and pull it out. Fortunately it either went down or he spit it out by morning. I've never seen a cardnial go after one, and they're little piranhas! Nope, it was the threadfin... One of the most peaceful fish in the world. Go figure...

Well aggression and eating are two completely different things. I agree that Bettas aren't aggressive but they are micro predators in nature. I don't see a full grown male betta struggling with eating an adult RCS. Like a well fed lionfish they may get too lazy to try but I wouldn't combine them with anything except RCS culls that I didn't care about loosing. My praecox are juveniles about 1" they couldn't fit the shrimp in their mouth they just thrashed it until it fell apart into smaller pieces. And no we weren't talking nano fish just smaller fish as praecox were mentioned in the OP. True nano fish like brigs, embers, CPD, etc... are almost as small as RCS themselves and even they would eat the babies.

Have you ever seen how large a full grown shrimp is? A betta would would choke on it... Besides, they *are* way to lazy! That's agreed! Perhaps the praecox are more aggressive by nature because they grow up to be larger fish.... As for my 'incorrect usage' of the very 'technical' term of 'nano' when referring to small schoolers, well pardon my laxity. Have a bad day? Could you go take it out on someone else? Please?

I think you're being a bit too sensitive, but if I came across as rude or that I was attacking you I apologize. That was not my intent. Productive discussion inherently involves disagreement, otherwise what would be the point?

Thank you. I just think we were on different tracks. I thought we were discussing small schoolers. Not larger fish....
