I am coming right to the experts!!!
I have a 90 gallon FOWLR with about 3 inches of crushed coral and a good amount of live rock and a canister (that i do not religiously take care of). I also have a nitrate issue... (shocker, I know).
I am working on slowly (because I have learned that nothing good happens quickly in saltwater) removing the crushed coral and thinking about going either bare bottom or sand.
SOOOOO... my question(s)
1. Am I better to go with bare bottom or a deep sand bed (maybe use a little of the crushed coral as the base?)
a. if I go with sand, is there a less expensive way than getting the live sand at 20 bucks a bag?
2. Should I keep the canister or dump it and get a HOB protein skimmer?
I don't want to get into a sump. I love the idea but don't really know what I am doing and I suspect it would cost me a fortune to get it converted once I get all the stuff I need. (Unless someone has a very inexpensive (I know, that is relative) idea. I have an in sump protein skimmer that I bought from Josh, but never got around to getting the sump put together and the overflow box etc. If someone is getting out of the hobby or has extra stuff, I would consider buying something that I just have to "plug and go" but don't know enough about any of it to make my own.
I am not doing coral right now because my nitrates are just WAYYYY too high. At some point I would like to do some mushrooms/zoas and yes, even the dreaded kenya tree. And maybe some anemones, even the cheapo ones are fine with me. (I just like activity, not necessarily the "rare" stuff)
Ultimately I just want a happy tank. I would like to be able to buy something and know that (with as much certainty as live animals have) it is going to live. Right now, I feel like it is a crap shoot.
So yeah, I have had this system for a while and it is time to do a little bit of an upgrade (probably a big upgrade, but I have a little budget), so I am hoping that you guys can help guide me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance
Attached a pic of the tank a month or so ago (sock with carbon hanging at the top); Have changed the rock formations some but it gives you an idea of what I am workin with.
Things on my wishlist for x-mas are:
portable RO system
a better system for water changes
