So both my tanks have been struggling with algae in spite of restricted feeding. So I'm planning on building a new combined sump to hopefully give me a bit of a boost in maintaining them(hopefully). First step is to replace the Toms rapids pro filter I've been using as a sort of sump (it'll be for sale in a couple of weeks if someone wants it). I've got a spare standard 29 from Petco. So far I have a filter sock holder and socks, a Sicce syncra 2. return pump, a utube return nozzle, a couple of ball valves, and a 300GPH marine depot overflow(eshopps clone). So I'm thinking of doing a single baffle to maintain water level for heaters and a skimmer and then leave the rest open. Seem like a good plan? I'm going to drill the side of the overflow to add a second emergency overflow drain which will allow me to tune the primary as a full siphon. Once that is done and working I'll relocate the heaters from that tank to the sump. Then I'll duplicate it on the second tank with and identical overflow and return pump. I don't think I can make my aquamaxx HOB1 skimmer work in the sump because the water level will be too low. I could just leave it on one tank and let the shared sump mean both tanks will be covered by it, just one more efficiently than the other. The height of the top rim of the filter sock is about 13 inches.

So far the sump is working good. Relocated the Tunze nano osmolator from the DT to the sump(work much better there) and moved the Aquamaxx HOB1 to the sump(finally I don't have to worry about leaks. I. need to trim the drain hoses as they are a little too long and make it hard to change out the filter sock
