so I'm not happy with my tank set up and want to change it. I've been looking thru some of your tank photos and see that a lot of you don't seem to use much live rock and keep it close to the back. I'm thinking of doing this, but should I keep a space between the rock and the back of the tank glass or just stack against it? what about flow behind the rocks? also how much rock/gln are you guys doing? I know I've probably got more than 46 lbs, thinking of pulling some out tho for more of a clean look. but it's so naked!!!!

you should definitely keep some space for water flow behind the rocks. If you don't you can end up with dead spots where detritus can build up. You also don't have to have just a rock wall with shelves and caves. I like to think of aquascaping as a three dimensional task. try to visualize your rock structure from all sides, front, left, right and above. Try to maximize your usable tank space and plan ahead for coral growth. You don't need to have the one pound of rock per gallon either.

Its funny I was thinking of doing the same thing. Its hard because there's a lot of corals stuck to rock that are 10+lbs. I have been debating selling off most of the stuff and redoing the tank. I'd like to have a plan of what I want the tank to look like not just buy random stuff and put it where there is room.

mine just all looks like piled rocks, with the only noticeable things that stand out being the neon rbtas lol

you should design your aquascaping to fit the livestock going in the tank. if you plan to have lots of little fish, inverts the pile of rock will be better if you plan on having bigger fish in your tank you will want more room for them to swim and bigger caves and overhangs

I'm more interested in the coral aspect, I can't keep any fish besides my clowns really. I want lots of softies, and maybe a couple lps and sps for color pop. I'm picking up another tank setup in a couple wks so some of the rock will go in that. I want to get a lion for that tank (30). he will be the only fish in there so I thought about using it as a bit of a grow out tank

IME you'll be able to mix softies, lps and sps for a while, but eventually, the corals that make it and do well will likely be one or just a few each of the 3 varieties. If your water quality is suitable for sps, your lps and some / most softies may eventually die off. Inversely, the same holds for suitable water quality for softies and / or lps, I almost guarantee that most sps will suffer and die off. I was told this by Mr. Calfo and thought I could pull it off anyway. I was wrong. Ha, ha. sps like very clean water and almost violent water flow where most lps won't stand this. I'm a bit lazy with tank maintenance atm so mainly lps is working well for me. I have lost some relatively rare and spectacular softies trying to keep them with sps - Acro's mainly. I would encourage you to try anyway, as I still am to a point. I have just a few sps that seem to be doing well in a dominantly lps stocked set-up. The other sps died off which is OK by me since I'm not going to fight / chase my system around to try and keep everything happy. I think we all find out eventually that we may want to keep certain types of corals, but in reality, they corals we have that will do really well will generally be of a certain type that does well in the particular system... if that makes any sense.

I'm not a huge fan of sps anyway, so if they don't work its no biggie. I love movement in my tank, but I've never really tried any sps so figure I can't call myself a hobbiest if I haven't tried all aspects. I'm lazy about super clean water so it may be a fail trial, but who knows lol.

well this system is a combination of my one year old system (much was taken from robs system tho when I bought my setup from him) and another 3 yr system that I just bought. I had a bad case of red slime a few months back along with an aptasia takeover so I lost alot. I had a huge colony of hammer, now only have two baby heads left. trying to start over but everyone Is so far away. my rbtas are really pretty colored, pics don't do them justice. and don't mind the overflow box, it's safe keeping my frags till I get more glue lol db.tt/fjyAF5bH db.tt/wS8MDN8J

db.tt/zVHRTGy5Here's my rescape.....again lol...it's still cloudy but, I think I like it better. Just looked so cluttered. I have a couple really huge rocks so takes up a lot of space. Most the others have coal attached so I took out what I didn't need. Ill be setting up another tank soon I think so will clean out a bit more than as well. Sent from my Galaxy S3 using ProBoards
