My 54corner tank is reef ready, so it has the built in overflow. The small slits at the top of the overflow are small, and I don't think I'm getting the flow thru them like I used to. There are 2 other rows of them further down, but the lower one is probably buried in sand, and the middle one is probably covered with coraline. I'm thinking about using something to make the ones at the top wider, not huge but about double the size of what they are now.
Any thoughts on what to use to make it easy and least amount of mess?
Dremel comes to mind, or an air grinder like a right angle type.

Dremel and a steady hand would be my first choice to enlarge the holes in the overflow.

Dremel. But before you start cutting, what is the return pump pushing? Perhaps the pump flow has decreased.

The return line hasn't been touched, but the water level in the tank seems to be about a 1/8-1/4" higher than normal.
I have done nothing at all except for weekly water changes to the tank for about a year, so for the water level to rise up in the tank is a little alarming.

Yes,sounds like you need more drainage. The pump is pushing more water up than there is water draining down. Most likely from sand blocking the bottom slots and coraline blocking the middle.

Hopefully there isn't any partial blocking in the drain line? I know I have to clean out my overflow box, gurgle busters and syphon tube every 6 months or so. If I don't I get the same exact problem.

I pull my durso every couple of months for a cleaning, just did it last week and it's all clear. I've been noticing the water level rising for the past couple of months, but thought I was imagining it. But the more I think about it and watch it...........it has to be because of the lower slots getting blocked. I can't see them at all, but it's all it really can be.
I'll have to find a Dremel and work on the top slots, nothing huge but a little bigger should make a big difference.

Opened up the slots today and it worked great............water level is back where it should be and the surface is skimming again. Dremel with a drill bit, only took a couple of minutes, and it was done.
