We are now starting to think about getting a clam for our 40 gallon breeder reef tank. I have no idea as to what type would work best in our tank. I know that many of you out there have them in your aquariums and I would love to get some feedback and experiences. I'm in love with the looks of this one, but I don't know if it's a good "starter" clam. Our display tank has been up and running for about 18 months with a good skimmer (Marineland Super Skimmer 65 gallon), 4T5HO + 2 T5VHO lighting and 70 pounds of live rock. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Melissa www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=497+2057+3218&pcatid=3218

Crocea and deresa clams seem to be pretty hardy. I've also kept maximas before but they seem like the first to have issues, at least for me.

Thank you Ryan..... so do you think the one in the link is a good choice? It seems to be at the lower end of the light needs range and fairly easy to care for!

Cool, if you order from liveaquaria, you'll at least get the 14 day guarantee. Plus the shipping is flat rate so you can add as much as you want and not have to pay extra shipping. Can't get that at any LFS

I have had Crocea, desara, and now my maxima I have had for 2+ years when I got it it was just over an inch now 3"+ I would say the derasa and the maxima are easier to keep for me
I would buy a clam locally they dont always ship well and with the temps......

If your going to order them online don't forget about aquacorals.com the shipping is next to nothing because there in Maine. They have a couple good starter clams.

Is it true they suck calcium like it's soda? I've never had one but based on what I've read I'd make sure to have calcium additive and test kit prior too. Maybe someone with one will tell you I'm wrong....and if that's the case it's probably true cause this is just hearsay. Good luck with your Clam, also don't forget about cultivated reef, he's got some nice ones I was there last night.
