So the tank's been going for a few a few weeks now and so far everything is going relatively good. A few problem, a few adjustments, but for the most part good. My biggest issue is a brown film on the surface of the water. I'm guessing it's diatoms from nts, but it seems no matter how hard I try, I can't get rid of them. I've run a sheet of paper towel over the top. That cleaned it up til the next morning when I realized it was back. Added a spray bar thinking that if it had more evenly distributed current... nope just streamers of water. Ideas, options, opinions.....

Are you running a skimmer yet? Is there micro bubbles coming from anywhere? I used to get this year's ago when I was running the coralife 120 super needle wheel skimmer with no bubble catcher.

Yeah I'm running a reef octopus 150 Int with good foam and good collection. No chance of return to tank. It drains into a one gallon jug. No microbubbles that I can see. Wondering if it has something to do with plumbing. Or lighting for that matter.

Wondering if plumbing is set up right. Should I have an overflow box around the bulkhead? Or maybe return plumbing. Not strong enough current to push to the overflow elbow

I think you need an overflow that siphons from the top of the tank and leaves through the bottom of the overflow this skims the surface water pulling all that into the sump.

If you have wavemakers or powerheads try to aim them at the surface slightly(not directly) and see if that helps.

I have my return pump coming up to Loc-Line. It hits a Y as soon as it comes into the tank. A fan nozzle sits on the surface, keeping any film moving into the overflow box. The bottom of the Y is a round nozzle lower in the tank. Seems to be doing alright.
