Does anyone know how to prevent java fern from melting. I have a low tec set up. 55gallon tank, temp is 78, fluval plant LEDs, ph 6.8, and I do 50percent water changes weekly. My other plants are growing and green(crypts, jungle val, water sprite). I can't seem to keep java fern melting. I would appreciate any tips.

My aquarium is a 55 gallon with fluval plant led lights. For livestock I have tigerbarbs, rasboras, neons, bristlenose plecos, and zebra loaches. It has been running for a year and a half. I also have two 75s a 30 long and a 29 running. Three are cichlid tanks and another planted. I've been having trouble with java fern in both tanks. I've only been doing planted tanks for a couple years but have been in hobby for twenty. Attachments:

I wanted a planted tank bad, but took the easy way out and got a full blown Sps reef instead! fermentedhiker or spotfin will probably be the best ones to help.

Thanks, I would love to try salt someday, after I perfect keeping plants. Cichlids are easy its really just proper water chemistry, diet, and keep up on water changes.

Welcome, and nice tank. What is wattage on your lights? Perhaps they are too bright. Do you add any fertilizer? I've had mixed results with java fern. What do you keep for cichlids?

Thanks, spotfin. I'm using fluval plant led 46 watts(3500 luman). And I add fluval flourish every week when I do a 50% water change. For cichlids I'm keeping brichardi, frontosa, and several mbuna species in three tanks.

On the left is java fern before melt. The right side is already starting to melt. After I lost most of fern I added water sports jungle val to fill tank out. I Attachments:

On the right, I only see 2 leaves effected. Is this as bad as it gets? Or does the whole plant die? Java will loose older leaves and they'll turn brown and need to be cut off, but new leaves take it's place. How do you attach it to the substrate and what do you use? Are they tied to the driftwood with string? I've tried super glue to attach (it's safe and some folks have great luck with it). But I've had it kill whole plants. It'll usually kill off the section where the glue is used.
Java fern is a lower light plant, but it'll grow in a high tech environment as well.
You said you were using Fluval Flourish, did you mean Seachem Flourish? If so, it's only for trace elements. Not macros like NKP. Seachem sells those separately. Maybe the ferns aren't getting enough NKP?
If it's Seachem Excell for carbon, Excell is known to give some plants troubles...
Just some thoughts.... I've never had fern melt. I don't use Excell. Just CO2 or nothing.
