it almost sounds like the previous caretaker was just experimenting/learning as he went?

There was a lot of learn as you go happening at the owners expense unfortunately.

I cant wait to see the turnaround on this project. Im sure youll find it very rewarding when one day you walk in and its a pristine reef.

So I went over today and installed two water change barrels with eshopps float valves. When I got there the trigger systems 39 gallon sump was over flowing all over the basement floor and the octopus skimmer was overflowing as well. Turns out the eshopps float valve that I was told didn't work works fine but I reinstalled it not knowing that one of the orings had been removed or missing which allowed water to leak out of the top fitting all week. So I installed a new float valve and will get a new oring for the original valve so I can use it in one of the barrels. Here's a pic of the tank today just so everyone can see. It was completely green last time I was there and has cleared enough to see some fish and rocks. I've definitely got a lot of work ahead of me to get this mess straightened out.

At least now the sump will stay at a constant water level so the skimmer can do its job. It was already pulling out a thick green foam when I left today.

Quite a task bringing this tank around. Will you be able to eventually change the rock scape? I really like how you did the Cafe tank with isolated rock piles.

Yea I plan of redoing everything including the rocks. It's going to be a long process though.

Plus some Lps I could help with. I appreciate that. It's going to be a long time before any corals go in though and it will probably only be low maintenance leathers and soft corals. Time will tell though. The owner wants a tank like the 220 restruant tank I care for that's filled with big leather corals so that's the goal in mind.

^^I have a trigger sump and love it. I'm surprised you don;t like it. Is it overpriced for a sump? Yes, but they are awesome. I'm also surprised you wouldn't keep the APEX and get it set up. Then you can keep an eye on things remotely.

I hate how the trigger systems sump is setup. The area where the overflow dumps in and flows over a tray of filter socks is the stupidest setup ever. Its far easier to have an open bay directly under the overflow outlet where a larger filter sock can be slid over the entire overflow pipe. Im a big fan of less is more with sumps when it comes to the extra BS that companies try to build in. As far as the apex goes, there's really no need for it. It would just be one more electronic thing to fail or have to be dealt with. This is going to be a soft coral tank when it's all done anyway so there won't be much of anything to monitor with an apex.

This is going to be a soft coral tank when it's all done anyway so there won't be much of anything to monitor with an apex. Power outage, Alk swing or heater fails. You could even set up the system to do remote water changes, check on the tank via live video stream, feed the tank a few times a day. I know I just said all that for nothing because you've been in the hobby a long time and don't need me to tell you what an Apex does. I'm sure you also have plenty of good reasons to not need or want one. everyone's different
