Wow so quick little mishap last night! My heater failed in the off position. My Apex quickly notified me that my tank temp had dropped down to 75°. Couple years ago I was running my tank cold, around 76°. I was trying to test if algae would be effected by the colder Temps. Back then this drop would of been nothing but now I run my tank around 78.5° and I really didn't like seeing a 3.5° swing in a few hours! Luckily when my Apex notified me I had time to find a couple smaller old heaters and my tanks slowly creeping back up since 4am. **if this happens don't over react and bring the temp back up to fast!! Double the stress** Moral of the story? Controllers save reef tanks! Nothing seemed overly stressed but I have no doubt a couple more degrees and I'd of probably lost a couple things. Not to mention what would of happened if I had no controller and my heater failed in the on position? It would of cooked my whole tank quick! Protect your investment and at the very least get your self a Ranco temp controller. Don't trust the cheap controllers that come with most any heater you can buy now a days! Apex, Reef keepers, Reef Angels and diy controllers are worth their weight in gold imo. Also a big thank you to jasonbowdoin for offering to bring me a heater first thing this morning before I found the smaller ones!

There, your controller just paid for itself. And the biggest thing for me was always the peace of mind that they bring... comforting when you start totaling up how much $ goes into our glass boxes.

Jason, I'm glad you caught it at the right time. Your post has helped me make up my mind, next purchase will be a controller. I think that's what started my tanks downfall. What I believe to be ick. I let my water temps get way to low. Stressed my fish right out. That and I went a bit longer between my water changes. I got lazy, and it cost me big time. I learned a lesson that's for sure.

I'm glad this helped push your decision over the edge to get a controller. There's a couple things in this hobby that are priceless and for me they're controllers and good reliable reefing friends.

For sure! I wouldn't dare try to add up what I've spent in my glass box! I'd be to afraid the wife would find the paper I wrote it on. Lol Although I have to give her credit because when I first started my $98 RO/DI was a big deal. Now $600+ on an Apex and modules isn't. Although it's mostly because I wouldn't leave the tank for more then a couple days without it.

Oh I had two bad ones last week a controller would have helped.
Skimmer boiled over spilling about 10 gallons onto the ground. I know it's about 10 gallons cause I just filled the ATO container and it was empty.
Son unplugged 2 out of 4 plugs from the wall. I didn't check the temp but was low.
No loss of life but my rainbow chalice is super pissed off.
I've been selling lately to fund an apex. I just cut a bunch of hearty $5 sps frags!

Maybe toy should consider selling some mini colonies? I would hate to see anything happen to all those crazy expensive corals you have!!

hahah just my week, doing a water change on my tank today I got lifted, one of my ancient maxijets shorted out and was dumping wall current into the tank. gfci are supposed to prevent that right? I have never actually had a gfci work at the right time they always trip for nothing but don't trip when there is a problem.

I believe the gfci will only trip in that instance at the moment you get shocked?

I believe the gfci will only trip in that instance at the moment you get shocked? GFCI's trip based on seeing a difference in the current flow between the Hot and Neutral wires. If the tank has no ground connection(Like a grounding probe) then all the current ends up going back on the same circuit so the GFCI can't tell there is a problem. It should've tripped when you got shocked though, because you were giving it a path to ground, unless you had both hands in and it was just passing through you and back to the tank.

ahh it went from my arm on the edge of the tank back down my arm into the tank so the gfci wouldnt have seen the difference since I didnt actually ground it out
