is it safe to use Rain water in salt tanks .it shouldnt have any contaminants in it.and it rains in the oceans....

The oceans not a 3'-4' glass box ;D unfortunately there's really no way to cheap out on the most important part of keeping a reef tank besides the tank it self and that's clean synthetic saltwater. You could use it., but it may not be your best option. Lots of folks use rain water in freshwater fish applications. Here on the east coast of the U.S. the prevailing winds tend to bring contaminants from mid-west factories. Might be worth looking into further.

University of Maine will do a fairly extensive water test. Not sure of the cost. If you really think rain water is the way to go, it might be worth it. Or not. I like my filter.

I cant get any Ro water but I can buy distilled water will that be ok in a reef tank for the time being?

Im in Rockland just found out today Walmart has a water dispensing station it is Ro water and ultraviolet cleansed 37 cents a gal bring your own bottles.

Total desolved solids, it will tell you how much other than water is in your water, you want 0

When I used Walmart water I would use a tds meter and test it almost like I would my tank expecially for copper and would retest every cpl time's
