So I picked up a standard 125 from Ryan this evening. Starting me down another tank project road This one will be a freshwater. My plan at this point is a harem of Aulonocara jacobfreibergi with a subordinate school of Orange Chromides. Initially I'll transfer my school of tiger barbs over to it and eventually I want a school of a dozen Lake inle danios and maybe a trio of Synodontis lucipinnis. Not sure about plants some Anubias and java fern are likely as well as dwarf lily. After that I haven't decided. Heaters will probably be a couple of finnex titanium and some sort of controller , and ATO is a must have I think. Filtration?? I have an AC70 on the 55 this will be replacing but obviously more will be needed. My gut would be to use two AC110. I'm not sure what to do for lighting. led options are a bit limited for a tank this size with out getting crazy expensive. I do need to find a pile of stone to do some scaping with. Something similar to Seiryu stone would be ideal.

Sounds like it will be a nice setup. Do the Orange chromids need slightly brackish conditions? Got to love AC filters. Best hob filters there are. Post some pics as you progress. You can find led fixtures easily for this tank, especially if you are growing anubias and java. I use two 3' fixtures over my 6' tank.

Wild Chromides do better in brackish. These are captive bred "red" chromides so they aren't as particular. Even the wild ones can be successfully kept in fresh if you keep a pristine tank(some wild populations have been found in land locked lakes so clearly they are adaptable). That and keeping things in the liquid rock range for the Jakes should be close enough for them to thrive.
Yeah Ac filters are pretty bomb proof. I'll probably eventually upgrade to dual 110's with intank media baskets and use onion bags of reef rubble for filtration, along with some purigen. Sponge prefilters on the intake will handle mechanical filtration and keep the media in the filter from getting clogged with detritus.
lights hmmm...... what fixtures are you using? I was looking at a BML one for this tank(about 535$ though). I've used finnex fixtures on a lot of my smaller tanks. They work well. They are usually mono spectrum arrays though so I think the spectrum falls short of ideal for some things(algae loves them though )
For substrate I'm leaning toward sand. Either caribsea black(more like mottled gray) aragonite or the more budget friendly option is black diamond sand blasting grit.
Anyone know any good places to pick up good stone reasonable?

Can find seiryu stones on the net, even Amazon.com. I know a place where there are some similar looking stones. They have more white veins than seiryu. The beach in lincolnville has nice, smooth stones. Many are granite; others are black or dark gray. Go at low tide. I use Beamswork led lights on my tanks. There are various configurations. Bought mine at Aquatraders. What is the water like in your area? Mine has a high pH (8+), but is rather soft (both gh and kh).

I was hoping to find something similar to seiryu but local(like at a landscape supply) to avoid shipping charges(rock ain't light). I have found similar color and structure in some rocks here, but nothing with as many fissures/crevasses etc...
My water has a 7.8 PH and moderate hardness.

Looked over the rock pile today and found some nice looking pieces. Took some pictures with my phone, I'll post them here if I can figure out how.
